Over the past 20 years, OpenStreetMap has become one of the world’s largest and most impactful crowdsourcing projects. Thousands of communities have formed around collaborative mapping, connecting people and fostering the sharing of geographic knowledge.

Today, OpenStreetMap is an essential source of geographic data, powering a wide range of map services used by thousands of people daily and serving as a vital tool in managing climate and humanitarian crises. Although the main site, OSM.org, is not designed as a direct navigation tool, the experience of new users plays a crucial role in attracting new mappers. Improving usability for the public, therefore, benefits the entire community, alongside the millions of organizations that use OSM data.

In recent years, the OpenStreetMap ecosystem has grown significantly, expanding to every corner of the world and yet, the user interface of OSM.org is much the same as it was when OSM was founded in 2004. Among other challenges, it is not optimized for mobile devices, nor does it meet modern accessibility standards. We believe this is the time to prioritize a more cohesive, intuitive, and enjoyable user experience while making it easier for developers and contributors to create solutions.

To achieve this goal, we are developing a design system, a set of reusable guidelines and components that unify the design and functionality of digital interfaces. This system has been designed to meet the community’s needs, promoting consistency, accessibility, and scalability. It will ensure that interfaces are inclusive, modern, and capable of addressing the needs of a diverse global community.

We are a study group from the University of Brasília (UnB) conducting research on OpenStreetMap (OSM.org). Our goal is to improve OpenStreetMap by better understanding the profiles of its users. Through this research, we aim to gather valuable information that will allow us to identify the needs, preferences, and challenges faced by users when using OSM. Why are you using Microsoft Forms?

We have access to Office365 through an agreement between the university and Microsoft (I don’t really agree with this agreement), so for us, MS Forms was the best solution as it has no response limit and supports multiple translations. Why didn’t we use LimeSurvey? It’s paid. But if you’re not comfortable responding via MS Forms, we also published on Survey Backup on Cryptpad

We are an extension group at the University of Brasília (UnB). During university education in Brazil, we have the opportunity to develop projects that benefit the community. Currently, we consist of 2 students and two professors.

não está morto fisicamente, mas estou deixando de ser um mapeador ativo.

Durante os últimos três anos, dediquei-me intensamente ao OSM e foi uma experiência incrível. No entanto, tem sido desgastante e só consegui continuar graças à comunidade brasileira do Mastodon.

Ter tanto tempo para dedicar ao mapeamento foi um privilégio, mas recentemente fui diagnosticado com Autismo e estou planejando mudar de cidade para entrar na universidade. Antes disso, terminarei a importação dos edifícios de Fortaleza e farei mais uma última importação de endereços. Os dados das 90 cidades, incluindo 20 com dados de buildings footprint, estarão disponíveis no Github, a maioria com a licença CC0.

Os projetos de UX/UI estão disponíveis no Github e continuarei mantendo e melhorando para uma proposta melhor.

O OpenCollective continuará aberto até o final de maio, quando pretendo terminar todos os projetos em andamento. Atualmente, recebo cerca de 170 reais (cerca de 33 dólares) por mês. Para continuar, precisaria de cinco vezes mais, ou seja, cerca de 800 reais (158 dólares). Infelizmente, esse valor é extremamente baixo e, se não conseguir atingir minha meta, terei que dar um tempo no meu trabalho com o OSM e procurar um trabalho remunerado.

Not physically dead, but I am no longer an active mapper.

For the past three years I have dedicated myself intensely to OSM and it has been an amazing experience. However, it has been exhausting and I was only able to continue thanks to the Brazilian Mastodon community.

Having so much time to dedicate to mapping has been a privilege, but recently I was diagnosed with Autism and I’m planning to move away to enter university. Before that, I will finish importing the buildings in Fortaleza and do one last address import. The data from 90 cities, including 20 with building footprint data, will be available on Github, mostly under CC0 license.

The UX/UI designs are available on Github and I will continue to maintain and improve them for a better proposal.

The OpenCollective will remain open until the end of May, when I plan to finish all ongoing projects. Currently, I receive about 170 reais (about 33 dollars) per month. To continue I would need five times that amount, i.e. about 800 Reais ($158). Unfortunately, this amount is extremely low and if I can’t reach my goal, I will have to take a break from my work with OSM and look for a paid job.

It’s time to review a little of what I did during this year, one of the main was to participate in SToM22 in Florence you can read more about it here during this year I also learned a lot and I could help in the importation of the buildings in Fortaleza, and without a doubt this year was the year that I used JOSM the most even against my will.

It has been a big challenge trying to keep me motivated to continue with my work in OSM I have been dedicating myself day and night and it is hard to stay motivated all this time, during many days this year I thought about giving up and I feel that many of you who are reading me may have already felt like that but our work is like ants that in the end added up we make a big difference! and I really feel that every day OSM has received the recognition it deserves.

Está na hora de revisar um pouco do que eu fiz durante esse ano, uma das principais foi poder participar do SToM22 em Florença você pode ler mais de como foi aqui durante esse ano tambem aprendi muito e pude ajudar na importação dos edifícios em Fortaleza, e sem duvida esse ano foi o que eu mais usei o JOSM mesmo contra minha vontade.

Tem sido um grande desafio tentar me manter motivado para continuar com meu trabalho no OSM tenho me dedicado dia e noite e é difícil se manter motivado todo esse tempo, durante muitos dias desse ano pensei em desistir e sinto que muitos de vocês que estão me lendo talvez já tenham sentindo assim mas nosso trabalho é como de formigas que no final somado fazemos uma grande diferença! e realmente sinto que a cada dia o OSM tem recebido o reconhecimento que merece.

In these last 2 years as a full time volunteer, I have developed several mapping projects around Brazil, because I believe it is my duty to contribute because of the deficit the map had in my region. My goal as a mapper is to try to decrease the blank spaces in OpenStreetMap so that more people can use them and thus more mappers emerge.

I understand that not everyone has time or interest in mapping, the most they can do is the basics, and many times they forget about OSM because they can’t use it on a daily basis, even more in a country like Brazil where hardly a worker would have time to be updating maps.

I have dedicated myself daily to OSM, but unfortunately this has a cost and since I am no heir, it has been very difficult to reconcile my volunteer work and my personal life, I have gone through some very complicated phases since I decided to dedicate myself full time, but I also had a lot of help.

Working at OSM is not an easy task, because your work is never finished, there are always new changes that need to be mapped, mistakes to be corrected, it’s a continuous job that requires a certain level of knowledge and experience acquired over time.

One of the first projects I did was using DAMN and then Taskmanger to be able to manage and map entire cities, with this project almost 20 cities were fully mapped from roads to buildings.

Nesses últimos 2 anos como voluntário em tempo integral desenvolvi vários projetos de mapeamento pelo Brasil, por acreditar ser meu dever contribuir por conta do deficit que o mapa tinha na minha região. Minha meta como mapeador é tentar diminuir os espaços em branco no OpenStreetMap para que mais pessoas possam usá-los e assim mais mapeadores surgirem.

Entendo que nem todo mundo tem tempo ou interesse em mapear, no máximo fica no básico e muitas vezes acaba esquecendo do OSM por não consegui usar no seu dia a dia, ainda mais em um país como o Brasil onde dificilmente um trabalhador teria tempo para ficar atualizando mapas.

Tenho me dedicado diariamente ao OSM, mas infelizmente isso tem um custo e já que não sou nenhum herdeiro, tem sido bem difícil conciliar meu trabalho como voluntário e minha vida pessoal, já passei por fases muito complicadas desde que eu decidi me dedicar em tempo integral, mas também tive muitas ajudas.

Trabalhar no OSM não é uma tarefa fácil, pois seu trabalho nunca está concluído, sempre há novas mudanças que precisam ser mapeadas, erros a serem corrigidos, é um trabalho contínuo que exige certo nível de conhecimento e experiencia adquirida com o tempo.

Um dos primeiros projetos que eu fiz foi usando o DAMN e depois o Taskmanger para poder gerenciar e mapear cidades inteiras, com esse projeto foram quase 20 cidades que foram totalmente mapeadas desde as estradas aos edifícios.

Esse foi meu primeiro projeto de importação semi-automatizada. Na maioria das vezes prefiro usar o MapRoulette para poder conferir os dados e corrigir se necessário. Isso acaba dando um pouco mais de trabalho mas isso é melhor para dados mais complexos como escolas, postos da policia, clínicas e outros dados.

Como estou sempre procurando novas bases de dados que possam ser usadas para melhorar o OSM acabei encontrando o GeoDourados, que é uma base bastante rica de dados sobre a cidade de Dourados, alem de contar com ortofotos de alta resolução.

Mandei um e-mail para os responsáveis pedindo permissão para usar os dados no OSM e, apesar de ter enviado mais de 10 e-mails para cidades diferentes, a única que respondeu foi Dourados. Por isso gostaria de agradecer ao Departamento de Geoprocessamento de Dourados, em especial ao Ênio Alencar, por ter dado suporte com esse projeto.

De todos os dados possíveis para utilização no OSM, decidimos começar pelas árvores, visto que além de ser um dado útil, seria mais simples de importar inicialmente. Não há duvida da importância das árvores para o ambiente das cidades, além de promover conforto nos dias mais solarizados também servem para absorver os ruídos produzidos nas grandes cidades.

O trabalho de importação só foi possível com a ajuda do Matheus Gomes que teve todo o trabalho administrativo, pedindo permissão da comunidade, escrevendo na Wiki e preparando os dados para serem importados. Sem ajuda sua ajuda não saberia nem por onde começar, obrigado!

Com os dados já prontos e com autorização, tive que começar a limpar áreas de conflito que já tinham árvores mapeadas. Usei o overpass turbo para baixar esses dados e comparei com os dados que seriam importados.

Every minute of 2021, 8 women were beaten in Brazil during the pandemic of the new coronavirus. Psychological violence, which leaves no physical marks, also hurt the dignity of many who needed to isolate themselves with abusive partners in the context of the health crisis, so the Mapa do Acolhimento was created to help women suffering from gender-based violence.

The Mapa do Acolhimento is a national solidarity network that connects women who have suffered gender-based violence with volunteer lawyers and psychologists throughout Brazil. Since its inception in 2016, the Acolhimento Map has made more than 5,000 referrals and has a base of 5,000 registered volunteers in more than 800 cities, in addition to having the mapping of public services of the safety, health and social assistance network. The project is carried out by NOSSAS, an activism lab that believes that a more just and democratic world is only possible if the powers of some do not suppress the power of others.  Now all the data from the Mapa do Acolhimento will be available on OpenStreetMap as a joint effort to make women’s services even more available.

There are about a thousand service points between shelters and specialized police stations, besides clinics and hospitals, and soon these data will be imported to OSM so that more people can have access.

A cada minuto de 2021, 8 mulheres apanharam no Brasil durante a pandemia do novo coronavírus. A violência psicológica, que não deixa marcas físicas, feriu também a dignidade de muitas que precisaram se isolar com companheiros abusivos no contexto da crise sanitária, por isso foi criado o Mapa do Acolhimento para ajudar mulheres que sofram de violência de gênero.

O Mapa do Acolhimento é uma rede de solidariedade nacional que conecta mulheres que sofreram violência baseada em gênero com advogadas e psicólogas voluntárias de todo o Brasil. Desde o começo da sua atuação, em 2016, o Mapa do Acolhimento já realizou mais de 5.000 encaminhamentos e possui uma base de 5.000 voluntárias registradas, em mais de 800 cidades, além de contar com o mapeamento de serviços públicos da rede de segurança, saúde e socioassistencial. O projeto é realizado pelo NOSSAS, um laboratório de ativismo que acredita que um mundo mais justo e democrático só é possível se os poderes de uns não suprimirem a potência de outros.  Agora todos os dados do Mapa do Acolhimento estarão disponíveis no OpenStreetMap como um esforço conjunto para disponibilizar ainda mais os serviços de atendimento a mulheres.

São cerca de mil pontos de serviço entre Centros de acolhimento e Delegacias especializadas além de clínicas e hospitais, logo mais esses dados serão importados ao OSM para que mais pessoas possam ter acesso.

When we create a goal of how to increase the number of mappers in a community we have to take into account who will consume and how this data reached the final public, it is a proportional account, the greater the number of consumers the greater the number of mappers in the region. We need to consider OpenStreetMap as a complex ecosystem that goes beyond the open mapping community and that each group has specific needs. I propose that to better understand the OSM ecosystem we divide it into three groups of users: consumers, distributors and producers, and exercise a little reflection on each group

Consumers: are users who use the map as an end product for navigation, data visualization, planning, search, etc.. without contributing actively.

• How do they access the maps? (whether for navigation, transportation, exploring, trails, etc.)
• How often do you use maps?
• What impediments do you have to use OSM in your daily life?

Producers: all those who actively contribute to the map the known mappers.

• What is the profile of mappers in the region?
• What problems do these mappers face? (socio-economically)
• What tools do they use to map?
• How can we motivate these mappers?
• What are the objectives of the mappers for the region?

Distributors we can classify distributors as those who use the map as a basis for their applications within the communities such as a government that needs to disseminate geographic data or a company that needs its consumers to find its physical stores or any application that needs a map to show its data.

• How can we attract more distributors?
• What is stopping a distributor from using OSM?
• How can we improve our tools to attract more distributors?
• What data do distributors in the region need?

By asking these questions we can get a more complete profile about each group and define ways to target each group according to their interests and needs.
