Now after that meteorite came down over russia and everybody talks about those dashcams the russian have in their cars:
How about using such cams to collect streetview like data for OSM in a community approach? Would that be feasible? Or would the required software to analyze the video data be to complicated to implement? Is there somebody with insight into such topics?
cheers,

We have hundreds of gigabytes of video data. Thousands of hours. One minute of video takes at least 5 minutes to map. Who will volunteer to process all that?

I looked into this a few weeks ago before the meteorite after seeing all those Russian road accident videos on YouTube and thought it would be a good way to record data. There is a Video Mapping Plugin for JOSM which sort of worked with a GPX file recorded at the same time.
The plugin was very unstable though, crashed JOSM regularly and then disabled the plugin on restart. I also couldn’t resize the video, it always started small and while I could resize the window the video stayed the same size. I wasn’t using the latest .6 version because that hasn’t been released to the public.
It’s worth looking into and it did help mapping for instance exact locations of bus stops, benches, businesses, field boundary types and far easier than tagging with a phone/GPS.

Somehow the idea of IOOI: http://openstreetview.org/ but with photos instead of video. In fact it seems to be simply a collection of geocoded photos on a map - other photo services have very similar map views.
Related to using video for creating map data it is worth reading: osm.wiki/Video_mapping . Also see e.g. osm.org/user/ubahnverleih/diary/18497 (German; automatic translation to English) about automatic feature recognition in videos.

Yeah this really remembered me on the videomapping thing :) But during my thesis working with a seprate VLC instance and JOSM parallel worked fine.

in the meantime there is osm.wiki/Mapillary . I guess you could use it somehow.
