Learning OSM and JOSM and Accessibility

أُرسل بواسطه JJSmapy18 فى 14 August 2025 باللغه English

Good afternoon from sunny, hot, and muggy northeast Florida!

I am still learning OSM, who is not, and having a blast doing it. It is increadibly fun and incredibly fascinating. Always see and find something new every single day! Love it!

Right now I decided to make the jump to JOSM. I know it is a little or a lot complicated. Best way to learn is jump and start going. When I downloaded it the current version, 19423, was not active I down loaded a earlier version and needed to update. I was literally looking at help files, Googling it, asking questions, a lot. But, and don’t ask me how, I eventually landed the current version, 19423, on my computer. It was one of those moments that you have no clue how you did something but who cares its finally done.

To get started I did the LearnOSM again. I sometimes have to do it over and over to get the idea. Its a good refresher as well. For someone like me who has multiple challenges the fact OSM allows for going back and being able to go over is really good. I saw some updates that and changes that need to be done based on the new JOSM version. I need to figure out who to send those to. Now I am on working on the LearnOSM JOSM - Detailed Editing. Thank you also for OSM having the ability to work on a mock community. That is tremendous and helps so so much.

I do wish that some of the tutorials were more accessible for people with challenges. I think that will allow for a entirely new population of folks to get mapping. We that are disabled and something like OSM for a lot of us is a pair made for each other. Its quiet and you can do it any place and in any environment. It really is a awesome combination. I have a lot of suggestions to make this happen. Need to find out whom to talk to about this as well.

Here are a few….

OSM Questions, Comments, and Ideas

Introduction

Another little update. I am writing these, usually, on Sundays. Since I am still a new user of OSM I am writing these as a little how are things going. I wanted to share my experiences and ideas with the greater OSM community.

Confused

I am still doing the mapping and having a super hard time in some ways. I have a disability and if the OSM community could make the program more accessible that would be helpful to a lot of folks. I am haaving a really hard time mapping and understanding what the tools do. For instance attributes like car=wheel, just took that out of the air. I am not fully understanding the relationships and how many should be tagged and if there is a standard block of them already made up for new users. If anyone has any ideas on how to understand the relationships more please feel free to let me know.

Disability and Accessibility

I know I just mentioned that I have a challenge and I am curious what the OSM community is reaching out to folks with challenges. Keep in mind I know nothing about what OSM is or has been doing to make this possible. Its a thought I had.

GitHub

No idea what github is and I am not sure if I should use it or not. I would love to learn more about it and what I can use it for and what one cannot use it for.

StreetComplete

I am having a lot of fun doing this. Its simple yet important information. I am super curious about what happens and what the data collected goes towards after a quest is completed. Its simple yet I feel I am contributing in a small simple way.

Conclusion

Its not much but some questions and thoughts this time. Have a wonderful day!

Ask

If anyone knows of any answers to my questions, or thoughts, or people I could reachout to please let me know and feel free to DM me.

The OSM Journey Continues

How is it going and what am I up to now?

Introduction

I know I put in a entry in the diary not to long ago but I want to let you know what I am up to now. I am putting the finishing touches on my eruv map with I hope looks good. I am getting help with it and thank you to the gentleman that is helping.

What’s next?

  • I am currently spending a lot of time on StreetComplete and MapComplete. They are really good for me. I am helping my local community by validating roads, building, hours of operation, what sidewalks are made of, if the road is asphalt or what ever. I am really having a lot of fun doing it and its a good feeling that hey I have no clue if this helps anyone but it helps knowing I am helping.

  • I am also interested in adding things to OSM. I am fascinated by what I have seen from others. It would be good to start with one thing like roads, building, etc. Still learning the types of things OSM maps. Then build from that point once I get relatively comfortable with whatever this is.

  • Eventually I would love to get down to one or two things and really get good mapping those. I do not know the full capabilities of OSM, its a lot I am sure. Just hope I can be more specific and get very comfortable doing that one or things.

  • I am super interested in sustainability and resiliency. I would love to start to map and get involved in this area at some point. I also want to find out if OSM has something like Esri Story Maps. I want to see if I can tell stories of people for resilience. Cultures and peoples have has a long history of successful resiliency initiatives. That is the Story Map type thing came from.

Conclusion

I am super happy I found OSM and you all are very kind and generous and always happy to answer question. Just want to say thank you!

OSM is a tremendously powerful tool that I would love to see how it is used day-to-day by different organizations.

Till next time!

New OSMer the Beginnings

Good morning!

This is my first diary entry. I am new to OSM and have a lot of learning and growth to do. I have to say I knew nothing about OSM and am absolutely blown away by how many companies use OSM in their mapping efforts. Truly awesome!

I am starting out building a interactive eruv map using OSM. I am getting lot of help and I am learning all the code words of the OSM community. Learning what for instance nods are points, I think they are called wazes or lines, and relations are a combinations of points and lines. Learning to Tag as well. I am also learning and trying to learn daily the LearnOSM website. Going through the tutorials are very good. I am enjoying doing it, yes it is frustrating at times but that is learning.

I am building this eruv map for my community and looking to embed it on the Synagogues website. Learning right now I am learning about the editor and how to place points and lines.

I will keep posting every so often my wins, loses, and how it worked for me.
