PoGo Initiative: entry 2 xD

I have added number of Commercial and education buildings, and have started adding some houses as well. I am finding houses to be really difficult to do. The satellite images are not the best, and its really hard to map out houses, particularly with trees and what not in the way as well. =( I did a good bit of, “uh, I think this is part of a house…”

Oh Niantic, curse you! lol

Have you tried changing which background imagery you’re using? The “Esri World Imagery” option for your area appears to have been taken during the winter, so there are far fewer leaves blocking the view.

(If you don’t know how to change it, it’s under the “Background settings” tab, the one that looks sort of like three stacked sheets of paper.)

Hey thanks! The Texas Ortho one is great. However, I am seeing that they different versions don’t necessarily line up the same. It won’t matter on generic OSM map, but it seems like that would cause inconsistencies. Is there a way to tell how old certain backgrounds are?

The image data is available on some of the backgrounds, like Bing. I believe you’ll need to use JOSM to get tile information.

The image can be aligned. Use the “Adjust imagery offset” found on the bottom of the image layers. I try to make sure the background image lines up with the roads. Some can be off many meters. I’ve also seen different offsets at different zoom level.

As you add more features, getting the features drawn in the right place helps.

Most imagery needs to be aligned. Bing is pretty good to begin with but it’s better to check, especially in mountainous area. See osm.wiki/Using_Imagery and https://help.openstreetmap.org/search/?q=align&Submit=search&t=question .

One of the best reference data to align imagery on is GPS tracks on road, if you have enough of them (when it’s no longer easy to distinguish individual tracks). You can download OSM GPS track using your editor, or you can use the strava imagery layers, which present aggregated track data.

BTW, regarding the “disconnect between in-game and real world” you mentioned last time, I feel that disconnect is bigger when the buildings are mapped, because your avatar is way too big compared to the houses. The avatar scale never bothered me when I could only see the streets because GM only has a handful of buildings here, whereas OSM has all of them. Don’t let that stop you from tracing buildings :)
