Changeset When Comment

Hi iWowik
As discussed during our chat on Telegram, please stop changing name:pl from "Czarny trakt" to "trakt Czarny".
As I already told in the Telegram chat, it makes totally no sense to change "Czarny trakt" to "trakt Czarny". Every single Polish mapper will tell you the same."Czarny trakt" is a historical name, and "trakt Czarny" sounds simply foolish.
Moreover, I started deleting the words "ulica" and "jezioro" in name:pl, to be in accordance with the practice in Poland. You want to respect the Polish rules on name:pl? Please do not delete my changes.
Thank you in advance.

O.K.

I understand what you mean, but what else do you propose? A primary road leading right through the city center just because its administrative classification is higher than bypasses? Sometimes mappers need to be more Cartesian rather than dogmatic for navigational purposes

This change has been done for navigational purposes actually, so OSM-based GPS-es do not lead right through the Gludeni city center. If you really feel like correcting that, then do it (I don't have access to my PC right now).
There are quite a lot of cases, in former USSR countries, where roads numbered as "trunk" or "primary" by the local authorities, go right through city or village centers. Then, a bypass is built, but ... they "forget" to change the road numeration, which makes people map by passes as "secondary" while the old road through the city center is marked as "trunk" or "primary". The direct consequence of that is traffic not diverted where it should be.
This case is a bit different, as we are referring to a sort of bypass that is not marked the same from the beginning till the end, but it is stille due road numbering

Hello,
First of all, thanks for the link to the Telegram channel.
Second: you do not need to write so angrily, with capital letters.
Third: No, a border checkpoint is not a commercial area, unless it is within a shopping center (which is extremely rare). Administration buildings are certainly not commercial buildings either. The presence of a duty free shop does not make it a commercial area either.
Usually, what I do (and I already mapped LOTS of border checkpoints around the world) is to delimit the area with barrier=fence. That is what I would propose you to do.
Regards.

Hi.
Usually when I do this kind of edits, it is for navigational purposes (so OSM-based GPS-es do not lead right through the middle of a city / town).
Hope this helps
Kind regards,

(I saw the link you sent, but this doesn't clarify which section you are putting in doubt)

It's hard for me to reply to you on a change I made over 2 years ago. You should provide me with the specific node link/number
The only thing I remember is that for sure I tried to adjust the name tags to each country, as I do in every single part where a lake or a river. I am also almost sure I added name:et and name:lv tags.
However, I don't remember if I tried to adjust the river to the Atse / Acupite river, but it doesn't look like I touched that part as ... and it was 2 years ago. As French people say "a lot of water has flowed under bridges since then" ("de l'eau a coulé sous les ponts depuis") ;)
One thing that strikes me in this changeset you're analyzing: "imagery_used: Bing". Now I rarely use Bing. I tend to use Maxar (which for sure wasn't available 2 years ago), or - if there is a local provider (like in Estonia), I use it too. Perhaps the key to the issue you're mentioning is wrong imagery?

It is not a matter of outdated data. Lithuanian Wikipedia is mentioning a different name for the Eastern part of this lake.

94898072 over 4 years ago

I know how it can look when you see how the data was changed, but I will explain:
1) Someone before me had merged a couple of those Tribonys fishponds
2) I started drawing new ones, but it was impossible to merge them all correctly with the other ones
3) I decided to unmerge everything (which means only lines were left)
4) I added the tag landuse=reservoir manually for EACH pond
5) I created a relation, to which I added all ponds.
I think you should revert that to my version, because the result was exactly what I was looking for: having a couple of ponds within one relation (not merging them all, as it was done before me). Or perhaps you have another idea how to do that?

Ouuuuh! I see I had the wrong keyboard when I typed :D
It was supposed to be: "name:lt" and "name:pl", but looks like I had the wrong keyboard configured (French AZERTY instead of classical QWERTY).
Thanks for highlighting that. I will correct that in a few minutes

I was talking lately with a professor regarding such cases as Narsūniškės and Parszuniszki, I have found such cases also in Belarus (f.ex.: Arabinowszczyzna which became Arabaŭščyna). His theory is that after territories switched to other countries, some people were trying to transliterate some old Polish names (or old Russian names, etc.) and they made copy/paste mistakes for some syllabes or letters. A bit as if your last name "Straupis" became suddenly "Strauss".
Regarding your comment: I am fascinated by this part of Europe ever since I live in Lithuania in this sense: Northeastern Poland, Western Belarus, Lithuania and Eastern Latvia are full of names that are either Slavic, either Baltic, and it is totally mixed up.
I never investigated regarding Bezdonys, but the only time I went there I thought "either this name comes from Polish "bez danych" (without data ... which sounds too modern), "bez dań" ("without dish"...), either from Lithuanian "beždžionė" ... after which I thought apes are not exactly the most common animal species in the region :D I had also thought about "be dugnės", but the only water I found there was close to the Bezdonys manor, and it didn't seem deep at all! Who knows how it was 1000 years ago ...
For some names, it's hard to track whether they are Slavic or Baltic. Ex.: Sakalinė (sakalas) = Sokoleńszczyzna (sokół). Researchers must have a lot of fun establishing such matters.

93238564 almost 5 years ago

I'd suggest you not to move every single of such names to "old_name:pl" without asking just because at first sight you think doesn't have any meaning or phonetic relation to name or name:lt.
1) Parszuniszki and Narsūniškės are not exactly the most distant ones. I don't see the logic behind moving this one to old_name:pl
2) There are several other names that don't seem to be related at 1st sight, but are related to words meaning the same in both languages (ex.: Meiliūnai from "meilė" and Kochanówka - "kochać" = love). Sometimes, they have a historical meaning which makes it important for Lithuanian or Polish researchers, etc. It helps them also, sometimes, to establish where a name was Slavicized or Balticized.

Ooooh! Thanks for highlighting this. I had read "piliakalnis" instead of "pilkapynas". I will correct it

92832870 almost 5 years ago

Which object are you referring to? AFAIK, I usually translate "piliakalnis" with "hillfort", not "pilkapynas"

63958158 almost 5 years ago

I did that 2 years ago. I guess it was because didn't find any other way to reflect the fact that only Russian and Belarusian citizens can cross this border, in order to avoid all OSM-based GPS apps to lead between BY and RUS through the common border

90191629 almost 5 years ago

You prefer having it as "driveway"? I thought driveway is usually used to access properties.
However, "permissive" is not pointless: you cannot access the Rokantiškės cemetery all the time.

Знаете, ситуация на этим пункте пропуска поменилась не один раз. Наверно был такой момент, когда фактически былы там разные каналы, но мне сложно сказать.
