No OSM for a while

Diposkan oleh Jeroen Muris pada 21 September 2010 dalam English

It's been a while since I've had time to do some mapping, and it looks like it's going to be like that for another while still. I do have some tracks lying around, but just no time to do the mapping.

At this point I'm experiencing something one could call withdrawal symptoms... Feeling restless and considering doing 'it' in company time!

Oops!

Today I discovered I made my first big mistake in editing the OpenStreetMap: earlier this week I somehow straightened too large a stretch of the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam, resulting in a big 'spike' near the Claes de Vrieselaan.

See osm.org/browse/way/51683769/history, version 1.

I couldn't quickly find how to revert to an old version of the situation, so I corrected it manually. I just hope my spike doesn't end up in any not-so-often updated copy of planet.osm....

New GPS device

Diposkan oleh Jeroen Muris pada 9 Januari 2010 dalam English

In the past few weeks I've been trying to collect tracks using my iPhone, but I found the results not very dependable - sometimes they seemed ok, sometimes they were way off. Yesterday I bought a real handheld GPS device, and the first results are promising.

It's absolutely unscientific, but my opinion is that the GPS in the iPhone is not good enough for OpenStreetMap mapping...

A few days of mapping

Diposkan oleh Jeroen Muris pada 6 Disember 2009 dalam English Last updated on 7 Disember 2009.

A few days of mapping behind me and I must agree with those that say it's addictive. Also I'm starting to become impressed by what others around me are mapping. Someone reviewed the whole park near me last night!

I'm still trying to find a comfortable way to do my mapping. I find Potlatch easy to use, with good feedback and an impression of what the result will look like. JOSM provides more functionality, but lacks visual clues (it's only thin coloured lines and little dots). Also tried Mapzen POI collector and iLOE on the iPhone. The first is nice and easy to use, the latter does not seem to offer more and seems a bit more complex.

Did not have much need for GPS tracking yet, but tried Trails on the iPhone. I think that will be a nice tool for when I need to do some tracking.
