I did make a thingy that would allow logins against OSM, but hit a few hurdles at the time - not least that the API would accept both username and email without telling you which was which, and reconciling name conflicts for those who have already set up wiki accounts with names that don't match. That said, in the time since I did that, Wikimedia has moved to a shared login and presumably had to deal with this so that part might be a solved problem.
While the biggest hurdle for osm certainly is the lack of publicity (people don't know it exists) I think the second issue is easiness of use. People are lazy and have short attention spans. (take me for example) Probably this isn't a huge issue but this is playing into the death by hundred paper cuts scenario. I'm so happy though there is this diary so I can communicate with you guys! The feeling of community is what makes osm interesting for me. By the community for the community. :)
Ko1umbus: the biggest issue is lack of volunteers to do anything other than mapping. If we had more people working on development, the site would get easier to use. If we had more people working on publicity... we'd have more publicity. Do join in. :)

Thanks for the info Richard. I was secretly hoping it would have been some random problem...

If you want to communicate, certainly subscribe to the mailing lists that seem interesting for you: osm.wiki/Mailing_lists
But be aware that certain mailing lists (like the tagging one) can lead to heated discussions.

Unfortunately I'm one of the mapping only rodents. Only big fighting words, no code skills. :(
