A few weeks ago we kicked off an online OpenStreetMap mapping party in Penza, Russia. Our main focus was the building coverage and I’m extremely happy to share the results!

A geovis is worth a thousand words, so:

The key sources for the building outlines where Bing and Maxar imageries. To fill in most of the missing addresses, we looked into the governmental land registry [ru]. It became a permitted data source for OSM quite recently. Some folks also checked Yandex Panoramas [ru] to read address plates or to derive 3D building shapes. This source was also allowed because the OSM community got an explicit permission back in 2011.

To help us coordinate the efforts, the area was turned into a ‘mapping cake’ on MapCraft. People grabbed ‘cake slices’ and mapped within them, thus reducing the chances of conflicts in data.

Первая в 2014 году совместная вылазка осмеров на территории России прошла в Пензе 22 мая. Это уже третья по счёту местная мини-катовечеринка, что выглядит как зарождение маленькой хорошей традиции.

My friend and I were making an ‘exploratory OSM trip’ not so long ago and were recording some GPS traces to upload them to OSM later on. We both had iPhones, one of which was using 3G and another one was offline.

The results we’ve got on a device that was online shocked me a little bit, so I decided to share my discovery here in the blog. Check it out:

As you see on the right image, the track is perfectly aligned to the roads on Apple maps, so there is absolutely no usefulness in uploading it to OSM (of course, unless you want to get a precise copy of a rather roughly drawn road network)!

Processing this year’s SOTM group photo by Shaun with my super high-tech SOTM face detection technology reveals that there are 214 happy conference participants in it. The event keeps getting bigger, nice!

7 июня 2013 года в Пензе состоялась очередная встреча участников ОСМ, о ней и пойдёт речь в этой заметке. Было очень приятно увидеть не только опытных мапперов, но и двух новичков — всего нас собралось шестеро.

Как и два года назад помимо посиделки в кафешке мы устроили мини-картовечеринку: около получаса погуляли по центру и пособирали геоданные. Картопирог выглядел так:

Спутниковые снимки от Бинга в нашем городе появились только в марте, поэтому проблем с выбором белых пятен на карте не было. Да и без этого было бы чем заняться: тут и там закрываются и открываются магазины, сносятся старые здания и строятся новые.

Как и в прошлый раз, я решил немного подготовиться и распечатал обходные листы, купил планшеты. Из «агитматериала» были только наклейки с февральского хак-уикенда в Лондоне, хорошо бы обзавестись мини-брошюрками на русском.

Some of us may have already spotted that the next week’s featured image is the group photo made recently on the SOTM conference in Denver:

The first thing that came to my mind when I looked at it was that it would be quite interesting to know the exact number of people standing, sitting and even lying there. So I decided to find that out.

Counting faces manually is quite boring: it is easy to miss someone, calculate twice or even reach nirvana FFFUUU effect after getting mixed up somewhere in the middle of this boring process.

Probably, the most straightforward way nowadays would be in feeding that image to Picasa or any other software with face recognition, but that would not give an accurate result because some people are almost completely hidden behind others. And, by the way, most probably there would be still a need to count people, not in a photo, but in the list of faces found.

Первая картовечеринка в Пензе состоялась 2 июня 2011 года. Через две недели бурных каникул после этого события у меня наконец-то дошли руки до написания отчёта. Так как я был организатором мероприятия, поделюсь некоторыми соображениями и мыслями.

Так получилось, что я уже два года живу в Лондоне, на родине OpenStreetMap, и не раз был на местных встречах, которые проводятся почти каждые две недели. Решив съездить ненадолго в родной город, я не смог не попробовать собрать картографов-любителей в Пензе. Организацию мероприятия я начал примерно за три недели.

English: This post is about 4 new cities in Russia and Belarus with panoramic images on Yandex maps. These images are the officially approved source for mapping OSM.

Приятная новость. 12 мая было анонсировано добавление к Яндекс.картам панорам Минска, Красноярска, Оренбурга и Пензы. Это замечательно для нас, осмеров, потому что эти панорамы разрешено использовать для картографировании в OpenStreetMap. Об этом договорился Zverik ещё апреле, о чём написал у себя в блоге.

Разрешено использовать любую информацию с фотографий (качество дорог, этажность домов, таблички и вывески на домах, всяческие объекты), но запрещено копировать наложенные на панорамы названия дорог, адреса и другие подобные данные.

Оренбург и Пензу снимала компания neq4, Красноярск — City Scanner, а Минск — фирма M25.

Эта новость особенно важна для Пензы, так как город даже не имеет покрытия снимками Bing. Приглашаю всех желающих порассматривать Пензу на Яндекс.панорамах и поучаствовать в улучшении карты!
