Just came back from a weekend up north. Thought that a full gps would be plenty of track recording memory, but I should have known better. Mananged to fill in the loop around Hvammstangi, but didn't add in all the side roads, I was touring, not mapping.

Unfortunately, coming back down the east side of Skagi, I ran out of trackpoint memory, and without the laptop, that was it for the weekend. Oh well, lots of km added, and lots of pictures taken. Still a great weekend away :)

Along the way I've pushed some coastline around, and also, because it had been bugging me for a while, the road between hveragerði and selfoss has been downgraded back to primary. It's one lane each way, and even though it's planned on moving to 3 lanes, there's no way it could be called a trunk.

went away to a remote part of the country. Recorded some tracks that already existed, didn't bother to record ones that didn't, and in one place where I had, I didn't download the tracks soon enough, and overwrote part of it with newer, already existing tracks.

So be it. I made some spelling corrections on a few roads in the area, putting in the ð's properly. I guess this sort of half arsed mapping is what you get when you aren't in your own car with your equipment set up.

Following the day before's surveying jaunt, I headed out after work today and ticked off some missing streets, some missing onramps, and cleared out one more small neighbourhood.

Another nice big complete swathe is now ready. Still needs things like shops and churches and schools, and particularly on Öskjuhlíð, it needs some sort of marking for the forest and the cemetary.

Probably been a few months since I surveyed any new streets around town, but got on the road after work the other day, and filled in a whole neighbourhood. Gerði, check!

After reviewing the map today, and looking at my notes, it seems there's only one neighbourhood, around kringlan, and a couple of forgotten streets in Suður Hlíðar, and all of reykjavik north of Bústaðavegur will be complete. Hooray! I've also made a note of a couple of the on/off ramps that need to be driven in different directions to complete them. And tonight, I'm off out in the country to a new location, should be fun!

Someone new is mapping! Looks like they drive all over Kársnes, in Kopavogur. A couple of comments for that person: Good to see you drove it all! however, some of your streets weren't actually connected. The lines overlapped, but they didn't actually meet at points, so they wouldn't have ever been routeable.

Secondly, I think you've been a little overzealous with labelling things tertiary :) Almost every street in Kársnes is not tertiary, I'd say borgaholtsbraut and karsnesbraut only. Also, I see you added your own tags for "Industrial" for the Vesturvör, Hafnarbraut and Bakkabraut. I know OSM tags can be anything at all, but so far all the "industrial" areas in town have been marked as residential streets. I think "Abutters" is the UK way of showing land use at least, basically, marking them as the made tag "Industrial" will make them render rather strangely, if at all.

Oh, and could you add yourself to the iceland project page please? If I'd know there was someone around Kársnes I wouldn't have driven around there myself today :)

However added hotels and hospitals, I think there's a character set problem. The name has boxes for chars like ó and í. Not sure what happened there :)

Finally, I've updated the location of the ring road in Norðurádalur, just west of Öxnadalsheiði, now that the roadworks up there are finally finished. For anyone else looking at this area, despite the MULTITUDE of gps tracks to the north, that is no longer the correct location. :) My single track _is_ the right place, despite appearances.

This happens fairly often, there'll be a day when gpx uploads take 8-9hrs. Currently we're up to a 9hr lag on the oldest "pending" gpx trace. Of course, the wiki still has a nice green bar saying, "Up and running"

It's NOT. it always says green. That thing should be junked, or kept uptodate. Right now it's absolutely useless.

I'd extended a long way tracing around the southern west fjords, but coming back today to try and finish the track tracing out to Patreksfjörður, I found that my last way had been lost. Lost the motivation, will come back and retrace it some other time :(

I'd not done any real driving for a while, just a few tracks here and there on errands, but a missed connection visiting a sister tonight sent me off mapping some on/off ramps, and part of a new area. Still massive parts of Breiðholt to be covered, and I'm really not planning on ever doing it myself, but perhaps from time to time :) Southern Selás tonight, the northern part will get filled in next time I go to Árbærslaug I guess. And finally, I drove Naustin, downtown, though the gps reception there is pretty craptastic. That let me add a few more pubs to, though I've not seen any of them get rendered yet :)

Someone has only recently started importing PGS coastline data for iceland, but in some places it's incredibly inaccurate. Some large chunks of the south coast were marked "coastline" around the edges of farms, apparently the original source felt that the huge expanses of sand on our coast all counted as sea, even though they are a fairly permanent bit of land, and are steadily becoming more permanent now that grasses grow on them. The PGS coastline had the road well out to sea, and was obviously nowhere near the real beach/shoreline. I removed large chunks of it entirely. In other parts, the east for instance, I removed points until it went back outside the gps tracked roads.

Iceland Update:
I've added surface tags to the ring road in the east, based on a recent trip around there. I've finished filling in my tracklogs from my trip around the northeast as well, adding almost all of highway 85, and parts of all the towns on the way. (Húsavík, Kópasker, Raufahöfn, Þórshöfn, Vopnafjörður)
I've just about finished dual carriageway'ifying Kringlumyrabraut, miklabraut and sæbraut. Polish is improving, now just to keep filling in blanks, and getting more people involved! (I have no desire to drive around breiðholt and grafavogur collecting tracks ;)

Outstanding issues:
the surface=unpaved tag seems to have no affect on the rendering :(

A gps track I uploaded now says, "description lost" This corresponded with a day when there was a massive backlog of gpx tracks waiting to be uploaded.

All my uploads from prior to that date now have mangled descriptions, as if a latin1-utf8 conversion went badly.

I feel that the "status" of OSM is not well presented to the users. The "news blog" link on the left is very rarely updated, and I feel very in the dark about what's happening sometimes :(

Reykjavik central is really really close to fully surveyed. It's taken a week, and a lot of mornings driving around and then mapping, but we're now only a couple of survey spots off having all of town north of Hringbraut and west of Kringlumýrarbraut mapped out.

Vesturbær is finished, (streets, names and oneway sections)
Tún is finished
Teigar is finished
Lækir is finished
Múlar is finished
Háaleiti North is finished

Austurbær, including þingholt, holt, and hlíðar has a couple of gaps, mostly due to roadworks. I'm not even going to try and finish off the sections around Lindargata at the moment, it's just a mess. Just a couple of streets on Þingholt and a portion of Hlíðar south. weee!

What does that leave us with? Sundahöfn and surrounds, Skeifan (what a jungle) and landuse and info. We still need to properly split up all the divided roads and fix the intersections, which is going to be a bit tedious.

As for me, I'm off out of town next week, so Reykjavik will be left to the masses for now.

Did a chunk of Þingholt this morning, and also continued parts of 105 and 104. Soo many tiny streets downtown though.

Might have to try and fill in vesturgata sometime this week. Still too much of reykjavik unmapped! Anyone reading this, feel free to edit the wiki to explain how to add borders for postcodes and cities.

Though why I'm doing 105, not my home turf of 101 is beyond me.

This morning I drove a couple of missing streets in Teigur, found a completely new street in Holt, and drove the bulk of Tún and Norðurmýri. Ran into far too many sections of roadworks! Blocked me from filling the rest of Holt, with Brautarholt and Einholt being blocked off completely.

Debate question of the day, given the lack of street signs in the middle, where exactly does Langahlið turn into Nóatún? :)

Removed a few wayed, but unnamed, unconnected streets. What were they even there for? :(

One street I didn't get to drive down, but I think I've covered everything else, and labelled everything I drove down. (Otrateigur)

Found that for in town dedicated to OSM mapping, "auto"-"highest" is not the best setting. Going to try by time, every 2 seconds, should make for smoother roundabouts and intersections
