Where to map?

Vum KieranW007 matgedeelt de(n) 9. Juli 2025 op English.

Working independently to help plot missing areas but conscious of the current geopolitical situation. Can anyone recommend if there’s any areas to be mapped out of urgency? For instance Texas with the current floods, Gaza or Ukraine etc for the humanitarian issues and destruction of war. I want my work to have as much positive impact and possible and consequentially don’t want to be plotting somewhere remote in say Africa for instance when actually somewhere else is in a much more urgent and desperate need. Many thanks.

You can check out HOTosm which is an organization (no affiliation with OSMF) and they regularly do mapping activities for humanitarian purposes, so that’s a certain place where you will find where in the world there’s a called need for mapping using OpenStreetMap.

Hello and welcome to OpenStreetMap! I’m glad you’ve came here, especially with the will to help out people across the world, it’s always nice and welcome! As previously said by jimkats, HOTosm will have tasks available for you to help contribute to places around the world that need help, ex. with flooding responses, disaster preparation, etc. One thing about your diary post is mapping in active warzones (you mentioned Ukraine + Gaza), this is something that is heavily discouraged in the OSM community due to risks for the people on the ground who are involved in the war. HOTosm actually had to disable mapping in Ukraine due to the risk of malicious actors using OSM data to carry out attacks, which is not something that we want to be doing. Otherwise, check out HOTosm or keep up with issues around the world, that can bring you places to map. Happy mapping!
