day 1 Old lines reboot (M&GN & GE)

Vum MATTHEW NIBARI matgedeelt de(n) 17. Februar 2013 op English.

I started to put the M&GN line in for openstreetmaps for reasons to my project or other used for users there are roads and paths that had to be edited, I also advise users to chip in for Great Eastren if they what to.

I looks like you have been tagging these as railway=rail but that should only be used for lines which still exist - if this is a disused or no-longer existing line then you should tag it as such. See osm.wiki/Key:railway for more information.

Hello There and welcome to OSM,

I’m sorry to have to inform you that you have placed on the map a railway that no longer exists and in a manner as if it does exist. If you look at other old sites of railways nearby (Marriots Way for example,) you’ll see them tagged as railway=abandoned. Please see this link for further information :- osm.wiki/Talk:Railways#Abandoned_railways_where_all_evidence_has_been_removed

In my opinion something that cannot be seen on the ground, as is the case with a lot of the old railways, ought not to be mapped. However to be completely open this thread advises otherwise, https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/650/does-osm-use-any-historic-data-or-want-to

It might be better to tag the sections that are now absolutely non-existent (some are ploughed up and reverted back to farm land), as railway=dismantled.

ok what happens if you what to copy only the railway lines just to export it to gpx for e.g. but it copies all of norfolk for e.g. into a new layer

You can take an export of the OSM data, process it by changing the tags to what you want for your purposes. You can also use downloads for example from GeoFabrik to style the data in the way that you wish for highlighting the data that you think is important. You can use tools like osmosis which allows you to filter the OpenStreetMap data so that you get out only the data that you have interest in.
