Hi EthanMDFW,

I am seeing that you added some new roads in the Wooten area. Are these roads residential roads, meaning people live along them? They appear to be in the NFS boundry, and I am guessing they are really double-tracks. In that case, they should be changed to highway=tracks.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not sure how I checked that box! Updated now.

Makes sense, I can revert this back. Can you point me to a wiki page that describes track vs highway mapping for the USA? I haven't been able to find anything that outlines this topic definitively. The BLM website looks quite helpful for sorting out road types. I am not convinced they maintain this road to a Level 5 given that it is still closed after the washout a couple of years ago. A residential road is certainly maintained to a higher level. I worry that tagging as unclassified sends the message that the road is maintained to a higher level than this (plowed in winter, repaired after storms, etc).

I am following the decision tree provided at osm.org. Is there one of the items I have incorrectly flagged as "no" below that would indicate it should be an "unclassified" highway? Happy to make the change.

How to decide
Some examples where highway=track is generally not appropriate:

No. (does not connect to GP road network) A road that is minor but serves as a connection in the general-purpose road network. See highway=unclassified.
No. (No residences along it) A minor road with permanent residences along it. See highway=residential.
No (No permanent residences). A minor road providing primary access to one or several permanent residences (driveway). See highway=service.
No (No commercial or industrial facility, unless the towers would be considered). A minor road providing primary access to a commercial or industrial facility. See highway=service.
No (Wide enought to be a highway) A trail or path that is not wide enough for a typical four-wheeled motor vehicle [2]. See highway=path, footway, cycleway, and bridleway.
If none of the above are true for a road, and its primary use is access to the surrounding land, highway=track is likely appropriate. Some examples:

No. A farm track used for access to crop fields, pastures, orchards or similar agricultural land.
No. A forest road used for outdoor recreation, logging, or other forestry purposes (aka, forest track, woods road, logging road)
No. A fire road used for fighting wildfires in grassland, scrubland, and forestland.
No. A minor road used for access to conservation land.
Yes. A dirt track used for access to the mountains, desert, or other remote area.

Moolack spring is a year around spring. Water is accessible at the road crossing from a pipe. Thanks for your help in cleaning up the map in this area. I have a long-term project to finish mapping out the Umatilla Wilderness area. Let me know if you have anything that needs ground truthing. I often drive in this area, and can check out questions on the ground.

I think that including the word "dispersed camping" would be appropriate, since there are a couple of hunting-style campsites throughout the trees. I think using the word "campground" could confuse people, since it isn't offical.

I called the WW District and they said this is no-longer an official campground even though it is listed on the 2016 version of the USFS Map. I deleted the camp. Thanks for finding this!

The Umatilla National Forest is in charge of this campsite. I am guessing the campsite name has remained the same but have not been up there recently.

I must have missed that one.

It looks like it was fixed in Changeset #86014803

I drove this area a couple of weeks ago and found houses set back long distances from the road on large acreages. I classified them as service roads, as they are used to access buildings.

Do you have any suggestions on a different way to tag these? I am trying to stay inline with OSM wiki definitions.

When I drove by, it appeared to be an unnamed private driveway. Feel free to add it back if you think it is consequential.

No, they can all be reverted.

Yes, please revert. After looking over the way roads are tagged in your region, I agree with you. I wasn’t intending to start an edit war. It is great to have regional editors who are keeping the map consistent.

64306260 almost 7 years ago

My goal with these edits is to improve the map. I am committed to a cordial and production discussion on the topic. As you are the major editor in this region, I lean to your judgement as to the appropriate tagging and the best way to fix the issues.

Agreed. Changed to appropriate road type. East Mountain Road, however, is a track that turns residential. Attempted to reflect the use correctly.

Thanks for noticing. This is a work in progress that requires loading lots of GeoTiffs. Since the boundary is not complete, I will leave it un-tagged until it is ready for publication.
