I tracked down answer - https://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq - What does "(historical)" following a feature name mean? "A feature with "(historical)" following the name no longer exists and is no longer visible on the landscape. Examples: a dried up lake, a destroyed building, a hill leveled by mining. The term makes no reference to the age, size, population, use, or any other aspect of the feature. A ghost town, for example, is not a historical feature if it is still visible. Valid features are never removed from the database, but become historical if they no longer exist. The GNIS is unique in containing such features, and additional data concerning historical features based on authenticated documentation are welcome."

I am planning to delete all such nonexisting objects that were added using imports, especially ones mistagged as existing objects.

Sorry to bother you about extremely old edit - but do you know what is supposed to be represented by osm.org/way/174402870#map=13/44.4603/20.2402 osm.org/way/632139627 osm.org/way/35882027 osm.org/way/35882037 ? Is there anything existing there now?

Is it intentional that osm.org/node/3333491946/history lost amenity=bank tag?

"now" - it is there since a quite long time.

"linking to the discussion on the imports list" - given that it is not an import (or even an automatic edit) I am unfortunately unable to provide such link.

"It breaks all existing tools" - incorrect tagging to satisfy some tools is not accepted in OSM - see osm.wiki/Tagging_for_the_renderer

Note also that false wikipedia/wikidata links break tools that expect that wikipedia tag to be used correctly.

Note that this type of linking is not new - see osm.wiki/Key:wikipedia#Secondary_Wikipedia_links

wikipedia, wikidata tags should used only if wikipedia article or wikidata entry is about this feature

For example famous tree may have its own wikipedia article. Trees that have no own articles will not have wikipedia links.

For example wikipedia=en:Oak is wrong in the same way as wikipedia=en:Ikea
