Figuring Everything Out!

Zapsal NorthwestPAmapper 6. 12. 2020 v jazyce English.

As i’m figuring out how to use this site, i’m hoping the be a really good mapper as years go by, I want to help the area of Northwest Pennsylvania since there isn’t many people from that area on this website anymore, only a couple are actually still pretty active, I also hope to improve more of Lake Erie & Crawford County since most buildings were drawn years ago on old satelites imagery and I hope to fix and reshape the buildings to fit better with the more modern satelite map imagery thats used today.

Hello and welcome to OSM!

You’ve allready done a great job. Local mappers are indeed important, but it’s surprising how much a single active mapper can change on the map.

If you want to become a real power mapper, I’d suggest you to eventually invest a bit in learning JOSM. JOSM has many powerful features like advanced search, hiding or disabling certain features (if you’re only doing buildings, you can disable landuse to avoid messing that up). And JOSM also has many plugins and styles for mapping certain subjects (like coloring streets and addresses based on the streetname).

But on the downside, it has a bit of a learning curve, and you need to learn the actual tag names, rather than the human-friendly categories offered by iD.

I agree with Sanderd17 on learning JOSM. You may also want to look at getting an Android device (if you don’t already have one) and installing Vespucci and StreetComplete for mapping/adding data in the field. They fill completely different roles: Vespucci is more of a full-featured editor while StreetComplete is mainly for adding missing data on already mapped objects.

When I first started mapping, the Houston area was a mess. We’ve come a long way in the 8½ years since my first edit, but thankfully I’m not alone.
