Put state ID in small town names

Posted by Oleg Shalaev on 2 December 2011 in English.

I am using netbook + navit + openstreetmaps for GPS-navigation, and I realized that in USA it is sometimes important to put the name of the state together with the town name. For example, I live in Columbia (Missouri), but I could not find my Columbia among tens of others Columbias which exist in other states. Now I've renamed my Columbia into "Columbia MO", so it works better. I propose that also the others would do the same, especially for small towns.

Don't do that. It show up in the search just fine. On osm.org you have to press "More results" to get "Town Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, United States of America" which links here: osm.org/?minlon=-92.433837890625&minlat=38.8635368347168&maxlon=-92.2276153564453&maxlat=39.0294036865234

If Navit doesn't show enough detailed information then that is where the fix should go.

Ok, then I'll rename it back now. Note, however, that I actually renamed "Columbia" to "Columbia MO" more than a week ago, and the openstreetmap search still works fine for "Town Columbia, Boone County, Missouri, United States of America".

Yeah, looks like Nominatim is pretty broken still. Last update: 2011/08/19. :D

Yes, Nominatim has not been updated for months, unfortunately.
