I suggest you open a ticket at https://github.com/systemed/iD/issues and explain what you are seeing - make sure you indicate what browser you are using.

Did you choose a background? And if you did please note that there isn’t e.g. Bing imagery coverage everywhere. If you don’t have any imagery in your area (or it’s outdated), gps-tracks are a good option.

Here is what I had trouble with:
Look also at the background layers: In the top right of the dialog, you can choose the brightness: If it is at 0% (i.e. the right-most box), you will also have a dark background, regardless of which one you selected.
