Changeset When Comment

Hi Mike,
Thank you for raising this issue. I did think for quite a while before making this edit. However, as a resident of Milton Keynes for almost 20 years, I certainly regard the name of that “grid road” as “V8 Marlborough Street”.
My reasons are:
1. Road signs show the name as “V8 Marlborough Street”, with a consistent typeface throughout. “V8” is not in a box, in a different colour, or separated from “Marlborough Street”. Please see, https://www.dropbox.com/s/a3fmn47emt8kmji/V8%20Marlborough%20Street%20Signs_1.png?dl=0
…and
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jacwddfm3pfqr3s/V8%20Marlborough%20Street%20Signs_2.png?dl=0
2. There is a 100% correspondence between “V8” and “Marlborough Street” (i.e. all of the V8 is Marlborough Street and all of Marlborough Street is V8 )
3. When giving directions, local people will commonly use “V8” (or other similar terms, “H7”, “V4” etc.) as the entire road name; these terms are more widely used than the other parts of the names (“Marlborough Street”, “Chaffron Way”, “Watling Street”, respectively).
I anticipate that you will accuse me of “tagging for the renderer”, but I do not believe that I am guilty of that. I have not tagged anything that is not true on the ground (cf. “fictitious embankments” recently discussed in the Talk-GB list.)
There is a fine distinction between a name and a reference; both are character strings used to identify something uniquely (proper nouns, if you will), but IMHO a name is more commonly used in everyday speech, as is the case here.
I note that I am not the only one who sees it this way. Another stretch of V8 Marlborough Street was edited over a year ago (changing the name from “Marlborough Street” to “V8 Marlborough Street”) by @JayCBR. He received criticism in the changeset comments, but declined to revert the edit.
If the duplication between the loc_ref and part of the name is the real concern, then I would suggest that “V8” should remain as part of the name and the loc_ref should be deleted.
Respectfully,
Peter

@Benji2007, I see that you are a relatively new mapper. Please accept these comments as attempts to be helpful to you and to the whole community.

Also, might I suggest slightly more specific changeset comments? We all think we are changing things that are wrong!

Could I politely ask what you intended by the 2 instances of "bollard=no" in this changeset? Is it a bollard, or is it not a bollard?

Thanks for correcting my typo (moop)

Correction: im my first comment, I should have said "the Western half is a building".
Thanks for accepting my suggestions. I will update accordingly.

See:
https://campbellarchitects.co.uk/project/russell-way-crawley/ for details of flats "next to railway line", so on the South side of Russell Way.

I visited this site (Russel Way) today. IMHO the Eastern Half is still brownfield and not grass. There is a sign up saying that the site has been acquired, so re-development looks likely. The eastern half is a building whose purpose was hard to determine from the road. Could be flats, but didn't look quite right.

Thank you very much for drawing my attention to this error. I have now been on a trip along what used to be the A5130 and can confirm that it no longer has a Ref No. I will downgrade it to tertiary and remove the Ref (or change it to Old_Ref, as I see that some other sections have been). There are a few instances of "A5130" painted on the road surface at roundabouts, but they are very feint. My Satnav told me that I was on the A5130, but that just shows that TomTom mapping is also our of date.
Thanks again
Peter

This is obviously a huge changeset - and created some time ago - so you might not remember the detail. However (if I have consulted the history and changeset correctly) it includes a number of instances (e.g. osm.org/way/205996585) where you have tagged a road flare approaching a roundabout with "junction=approach". I can find no documentation in the wiki for this tagging and iD raises it as an issue, saying that "Junction=approach" should be a closed way (i.e.a 2-D object, or area). Could you explain why you tagged it this way? What did you mean by the tag? Is it still relevant?

Thanks,
Peter

Thank for your helpful comment. Yes, I'll try to get down there in the next few days and check again what the signage says. From memory, I'm pretty certain that it is signed in Black lettering on a White background (which means Primary route, but NOT a Trunk Route, doesn't it?). I may need to read the Wiki again to check how to tag it correctly. I also think that the A5130 follows Newport Road, then Fen Street, then Newport Road again. Also, you may notice that Fen Street heads off East, turns South, but then has a gap in it; I think the intention may be to fill the gap in and then route the A5130 along that to join the A421, once they have finished dualling the section down to M1 J13. It is an area that I will have to keep an eye on.

OK Thanks. In that case, I'll delete the railway crossing.

I am not clear why you have created a Railway crossing (foot) at the end of Manor Close. AFAIK there is no railway near here.

Thanks @rskedgell. I have added the commas and used the tool to check it. Thanks for your help.

I can confirm that the store in Milton Keynes (180010538) is now open, branded as Homebase. Hope this helps, but I acknowledge that this is not the preferred method of verifying changes.

Sorry! I pressed Update too quickly!!
Description should say, "Moved Kents Hill Primary School to correct location. Created construction site for Kents Hill Primary School." Source: Consultation document for Kents Hill Primary and Secondary Schools.

Hi Mike,
If I delete the names (in the case of footbridges) and revert to the road names (for roads), how do I make the Bridge Ref display on the standard view of the map, please?
I only started adding / changing the names to get them to display and to give consistency after I saw some with no name, one named "GUnn" another named "Bridge nn" etc.

Regards
Peter

Thanks for your comments @mapping man. I have added the name "Oak" again.

44589789 over 8 years ago

OK. Sorry if I have contravened a convention. I tagged it with the name "Oak" because is is a very prominent, old Oak tree, possibly verging on "Landmark" status. The house facing it is named "Oak View", so I thought it might be appropriate. In response to your comment, I have removed the Name tag.
