Hi, PhysicsArmature and welcome! Actually, engineers from Facebook developed an OpenStreetMap editor called RapiD(wiki page). It is based on the iD Editor (the one that you have been using) and features AI detections. In principle, you can map just the way you used to but the AI detects missing roads and lets you add them with one click, modify them when necessary and upload them to OSM. Currently the AI only detects roads, but what you described is similar to what this editor can already do.

It is also possible that there does exist a government layer with the houses. In that case you better use that layer instaed of satellite pictures.
