JOSM and the ugly christmas lights (aka dynamic buttons)
Апублікавана карыстальнікам Pieren 13 Кастрычнік 2011 на мове English Апошняе абнаўленне 18 Кастрычнік 2011.Recently, JOSM developers introduced a new feature in the panels. Now, the buttons usually displayed on the bottom of almost all JOSM panels are invisible until you move the mouse on their expected location on the screen. This makes a nice effect I call the "ugly christmas lights" where you have a lot of animations on the screen when you just move the mouse cursor around.
I already did not like the highlighting of OSM elements when you just moved the mouse over OSM ways or nodes, without speaking about the unnecessary, useless mouse cursor changing itself which introduced a lot of instabilities/bugs in JOSM for a while.
I like christmas trees and christmas lights but only during one week in december not during my OSM edits sessions the whole year. I just wanted to say that current trend of JOSM user interface design is not my type.

Display settings -> Look and feel -> Dynamic buttons in side menus

Yes, I know, thank you. This is one more thing I have to manually disable each time I have to reset the preferences (that's happening from time to time after an update). It would be better to put such amateur effects as 'opt-in' instead of the current 'opt-out'.

Absolutely agree. The recent change of tag hotkey (just in testing I think) wasn't handled very well either. At least on my config, it didn't respect my custom changes.
If you want the developers to hear your opinions you should use the mailing list or the trac ticket system though.

I also agree with you Pieren. Dynamic visibility of buttons should be opt-in not opt-out. I guess it might also be quite confusing to new mappers if the UI presents itself "dynamic" for the key features.
