Opinion poll about the new licence Odbl 1.0

Posted by Pieren on 6 December 2009 in English. Last updated on 7 April 2011.

Because the foundation is deciding now if the current Odbl 1.0 licence
proposal will be the next OSM licence you will have to accept or
refuse in February 2010, I would like to know what the community
itself thinks about this Odbl 1.0.
As Ulf Lamping said, it will be a gun on your head in Feb. 2010 where
you will have the choice between accepting this licence or stop
contributing to OSM and all your contributions will be removed.

Therefore, I would like to know what "you", the contributor, thinks
today about the transition to Odbl 1.0 licence in this opinion poll:

In the interest of balance: some people would say that Ulf and others are just making trouble and spreading FUD and bullshit.

This opinion poll is not FUD and bullshit, neither against the Odbl nor against the adoption process (OSMF votes for the proposal and the community will have to say 'yes' or 'byebye'). It is a fact that the process is a gun on our heads. And nobody in the foundation tries to find out what the community is thinking about the licence proposal before the final vote. I'm feeling that I'm doing their job.

Well a short pro/cons page would be cool caus Im not a jurist. For me the current lack of giving content is terrible. Oh and the lacking of attribution, there has to be a clear policy with the new/old license.

I didn't say your opinion poll is FUD or BS, but when you encourage people to look at your poll by presenting a one-sided argument I felt some correction was required. The idea that an all-or-nothing process is going ahead in February is not true. The Foundation vote is only the first. If most or even very many contributors vote against the new licence then I doubt it will go ahead. There is always the option of last resort: forking to two projects.

I don't vote there because I have to register.
How can you try to change the licence in the current state of OSM ?
It's just too late for a licence change !

You have to delete the data from users who don't agree with the new licence or who don't answer and that will damage the data in every country with a large community. Just imagine 5% of the german or russian data will be removed.

Thiis is not a big problem in countrys like the US with tiger imports under PD -> cludmade and SteveC don't care

I think the poll itself is quite neutral...

You don't have to register for the poll, just write your name/pseudo. For the real vote in February, only registred OSM contributors will be asked for the licence change.

chilly: I have no problem with the current process of adoption but I always read comments like "if a majority of contributors will not accept" or "if a majority of contributors will accept" but nobody is trying to know or ask what the community is REALLY thinking about the license change.

"It is a fact that the process is a gun on our heads"

Er, it's not a fact, it's a metaphor.

Incidentally, could you remove the obviously fake entries from the poll? I'm thinking "Adolf", "Sadam", "Pol Pot", "IchgrüßemeineMama" etc. which all appeared one after each other in quick succession and were almost certainly postings by a single person.
