Edits from StreetComplete

Sett inn af PlaneMad 5. apríl 2017 á English.

While reviewing edits in my neighbourhood, stumbled on a lot of edits by a new editor called StreetComplete. Streetcomplete seems like an open source map editor on Android to quickly add missing metadata to OSM around your location like streetnames, road surface opening hours etc. using a simple form based UI.

Github: https://github.com/westnordost/StreetComplete

Curious, I listed all the changesets from StreetComplete using osmcha and was surprised to find over 30,000 changesets since the first one in Nov 30 last year. Just yesterday, there was 2,700 changesets uploaded, so there seems to be a sudden surge in editing activity.

The edits in my city were mostly adding the road surface and looked quite good, and its exciting to see such well designed tools driving new contributors to the map. If you are curious use osmcha bbox filter to review edits from StreetComplete in your area and share any observations on the editing activity.

I’ve just come back from a couple hours of editing in my area using this very tool and it is indeed a great one.

It allows for users such as myself - who otherwise probably wouldn’t have gone through the effort of searching what info I could add to OSM - a very simple way to contribute to the project.

It only offered me to add, as you said, street names, opening hours, road surfaces and also building levels numbers. Maybe in a future version it will also provide a simple way to add missing house numbers, since almost all of them are absent from OSM in my area, which I find it to be one of the main drawbacks when using any navigation app based on OSM.

This tool is definitely promising.

Hi PlaneMad,

German mappers who do a lot of reviewing complain that its changeset always only contain one changed object. See the discussion at Githug and on the German forum.

Best regards

Michael

Currently StreetComplete creates an own changeset for every change made, this is why you see so many. The changeset comment describes exactly what had been done, there is nothing more to those changesets that that.

This will change for StreetComplete 0.6, which will group the changesets together by type of task done (i.e. “adding road surfaces”). Stay tuned :-)

There’s an editor that can add any data (allows free tag input), but which is simpler than Vespucci: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.geothings.osmtools

It is not possible to download data though, except for some areas (mainly Taiwan) which were pre-processed by the developer.

I’ve been using streetcomplete a bit myself and was pleasantly surprised with the UI. I thought it would have uploaded the changes as my OSM user account though.

It does

Indeed, it does.

I would like to be able to add quests to it: Which lines serve this bus stop -> route_ref Or if route_ref is already present, but last time stop was changed > 6 months: do all these lines still serve this stop? Does the stop have tactile_paving, shelter, waste_basket, raised platform (wheelchair=yes)?

I’m very interested in StreetComplete, and have made a few edits. It’s great to see new tools and user friendly ways to improve OSM.

I too am looking forward to more “quests” (i.e. types of change/edit), and the ability to add custom ones would be great.

This, Maps.Me and the new Kort app are positive steps forward for making OSM editing more mobile.
