TANDALE FIELD REPORT
FRIDAY 05/08/2011
Introduction and illustration of the program
Trainers meet with students at Ardhi university where by trainers explains about processes of the project and importance’s of the produced output to the community members. Formulation of various working groups.
TUESDAY 09/08/2011
Introduction to the area which is Tandale ward
On 9th of August we meet at Tandale ward office where we were introduced to the ward leaders and sub-ward leaders together with representatives from various sub wards. Tandale ward is composed with six sub-wards which are Pakacha, Muhalitani, Sokoni, Mkunduge, Kwa mtogole and Kwa tumbo, and all these sub-wards had more than one representative because this project is aiming at helping community members to make their own map to illustrate and show problems which can be mapped spatially.
Introduction of Project and its objecives
First of all the project was introduced to people’s representatives at Tandale ward where by Experts (Mr. Mark and his fellow) introduced aims of the project and here are some of the objectives:-
o Introduction of participatory technology for mapping to be used by community members
o To prepare map of Tandale by using GPS, Computer and Open Street Map software (JOSM)
o Helping community members to be able to map their areas and display their social problems through maps so as everyone can see and this might help donors and government to see the extent of the problems and hence find the way to solve it or reduce its extent.
o All in all this project aims at enhancement of community development through community participation.
Identification of community problems:
Community members were given a chance to mention various problems which are found in their areas and they mention problems such as:-
• Poor sanitation
• Lack of enough water supply
• Poor accessibility
• Poor drainage system
Those were the major problems identified in the area just partially as they are mentioned by residence of Tandale ward.
Ward residence were introduced to the program
• Tools to be used were introduced and displayed to all perticipants including community members and Ardhi University students. Tools were Computers, GPS (Geographical Position System) and Cameras.
• How to open the programe.
Open computer, goes to start then Click JOSM (folder) click JOSM tested to open the program there after click upload to select the position to be displayed then upload it
• To operate and open the files which are from GPS
o Connect GPS to Computer by using cable then
o Switch on GPS
o Goes to Interface click connect
o It will display to your computer like flash drive then scan it.
o Open GPS babel GCI and select gpsbabelf.ex
o Tick device
o USB
o Output gpx. Xml
o Create a folder in a drive where you want to save your work like on desktop (file create new folder)
o Select waypoints and/or trucks
o Open points and trucks
o Down load the specific area
Points will be dispayed on that area on a map then map by specify them on “preset” whether they are ways buildings etc
WEDNESDAY 10-08-2011
Formulation of groups based on specific areas like mappers(walking with GPS), Map editors, satellite image group and story tellers. These groups were subdivided to formulate groups with a person from each specialization in order to make new groups comprised with mappers, story teller, map editor and satelize image.
Formulation of working groups based on sub-wards and each group was comprised with both students and community members who were the residence of specific sub-wards
The six groups introduced include both students and community members based on their specific areas or location of residence
The area was divided into different sub wards like sokon, pakacha, Muhalitani, Kwa tumbo, Mkunduge, and Kwa mtogole site reconuicence was done according to groups
First assignment was to go to the site and map various features such as buildings, toilets, water points, schools, churches, and paths by using GPS (just taking waypoints and trucks)
Both attribute and spatial informations were picked such as drainage and sanitation. Also points were noted down on note books such as names of features like building names for example Mama K shop which was point number 049 in a GPS.
We returned to the office and up load data to the map JOSM softiware as it was elaborated on Tuesday.
THURSDAY 11/08/2011
Groups were simplified and some goes to the field while others were left to go on with map editing by naming way points and trucks as they were uploaded from the GPS.
I was amongst people who were left behind to make map editing and I edited the area of Muhalitan by naming various features like shops jewelry shops, Telephone towers (Vodacom) and Kifaru stream along dumping site.
All this was done on JOSM software and community members were involved as we were working with them hand to hand.
FRIDAY 12/08/2011
Introduction to the day activity people go to the site to collect data other groups remains behind to carry on with map editing also knowledge of features tracing was introduced where by satellite image was used to assist this process.
Also knowledge of uploading the traced/digitized features to Open Street Map server was introduced accompanied with introduction on how to open street map account from www.openstreetmap.org
(I opened an account and upload data to the server)
MONDAY 15/08/2011
The same task of data collection (mapping) and map editing continues. I went to the site to collect data both waypoints and trucks.
TUESDAY 16/08/2011
Gape identification
Uploading trucks and way points as per street as they were picked or mapped by GPS from the site
WEDNESDAY 17/08/2011
Map updating and uploading features to be edited on JOSM software
Map tracing including tracing of buildings and other features such ads routes and water points also toilets and then uploading them to the internet (www.openstreetmap.org) via our accounts.
THURSDAY 18/08/2011
Entering maps on GPS from JOSM in order to work within our boundary and fill in the missed features which can be mapped.
Continuing with mapping by picking missed features from the site where by others continues with map editing and features digitization.
FRIDAY 19/08/2011
Introduction of how to enter reports to Tandale blog (www.tandale.ramantanzania.org/ushahidi ). and community members were assigned to go and collect reports in the streets.
MONDAY TO WEDNESDAY 24/08/2011
All the processes above are being repeated in different groups and informations. Collection of informations (reports and enter them into the map) also collection of missed data like toilets and paths.
PROBLEM AT TANDALE
Sanitation and Solid waste scattering
Sanitation has been seen to be a big problem at Tandale and even most parts of Dar es salaam and other Africa countries. Tandale ward is an informal settlement composed of different kinds of houses which are so much compacted together. Most of the houses are not supplied with sanitation system and population is high due to concentration of people ‘-within small areas (housing density is approximately ….) with this condition wastes are much produced without proper system to handle those wastes. For example there is an open space between Muhalitani sub-ward and Sokoni sub-ward has been turned into dumping site and as a result Mnyamani Stream is blocked with those wastes which result into floods during rain season.
On the other hand along side the foot paths that cuts across the settlement there are so many streams of dirty water from pit latrines and bathrooms and this becomes a great problem since children do play with that water and it results into irruption of different diseases to children and the surrounding community.
Solid waste scattering
Tandale is much affected by scatted wastes where by most of the solid wastes are just thrown along the building and on street paths and this is due to the fact that no points for solid waste collection as a result people throw or dump their wastes on street paths during the night hours. Also those people who are living along Kiboko stream (stream of dirty water (waste water)) which passes between Muhalitani and Sokoni sub-ward throw their wastes along and in the stream on top of that people throw wastes in every openly areas and this hinder children from having a better place for playing
How to solve it?
Creation of awareness to people on how dangerous their environment is and allow them to deliver their contribution on how to solve the sanitation problem in their areas why this its because most of the projects are failing due to lack of peoples involvement in project planning.
Regularization process (Regularization is the process which involve planning of areas which have been squared and provision of basic services like accessibility waste collection points and others.
Regularization should be done by expanding some of the paths to become roads which can provide accessibility and this will help to easier process of wastes collection in the streets and makes the street open such that people fear to throw wastes randomly.
Regularization should also accompanied with provision of waste collection points and dumping site where collected wastes from small dust bins will be dumped.
Creation of sewerage system which covers all the area of Tandale and allows linking of their waste water system to the sewer by free charging.
Negative side of the solution
People may lack money to construct the link to the central sewer
Regularization process will be accompanied with demolition of some buildings which will demand compensation
Positive side of the solution
The solution will help to make life of Tandale residence better and reduction of various problems which are facing them today
