First way to solve the problem: zoom in more.

2nd way: use JOSM.

JOSM has a display/edit filter system that can reduce clutter somewhat, however -please- only use it if you know what you are doing. But even without filters JOSM tends to be less stressful than online editors once you get over the initial learning to use issues.

I noticed iD has a hiding (based on feature classes) as well - since some weeks / months (the fifth button). Still, you really need to be aware that you’ve hidden (for your display) existing stuff, as Simon said.

osm.wiki/JOSM , http://learnosm.org/en/

Please take your time to learn to know OSM, and start slowly. If you need feedback regarding your edits, just ask - e.g. in your diary (since you now already know it)

Zoom in (use the ‘+’ button on the key board?) as others have said.

Select an image for background information too… I find that is very helpful. Zooming in may eventually loose the image but you may need to do it for detail, just zoom out to check the image info from time to time.

Are you trying to change an existing node/way (one already in OSM)? Then be very careful … click on the feature and read all its existing tags .. especially any ‘note’ tag that may give you more information .. or even a ‘fixme’ tag !

Merging .. not something I’d do… much easier to edit the existing thing.

I’m pleased your not deleting things .. that is something I had to learn the hard way.

Good Luck.

Oh .. another way …

In JOSM it has layers .. you can create a layer where you work - hiding the original OSM layer …

the image is on another layer automatically

You can then merge the layers ..

Be careful not to duplicate things … having two buildings where there is one is not good.
