Discovery of relations is important, and thus a good starting point will be to have most the the public transport route relations properly linked to one another. As part of the editing of east coast public transportation networks, I have indexed most of the available routes that are available in New Jersey and in New York City.

Browse through the routes and see if you can help out by adding more routes to this list! East Coast Public Transport Route Index

If you accept Zverik’s comment that relations are not categories, there are still some things you can do. I work on long distance footpaths, but the same ideas could apply to public transport. 1) I have added a list what I worked on to my OSM Wiki home page. (see osm.wiki/User:Srbrook ) 2) I have created/maintained a list of paths in my area on the county page (see osm.wiki/Worcestershire ) 3) There is a national project to list and map footpaths (see osm.wiki/WikiProject_United_Kingdom_Long_Distance_Paths ) You could probably find something appropriate to your area.

I agree with the rational that it is possible to directly extract these information by working directly with the data even without the group relations. However, this makes maintenance and verification of such route relations difficult unless has access to the entire database and can do filtering on such data directly.

The second option is to use wiki pages to maintain such group relations which is cumbersome and the time effort to maintain these pages with the number of relations (around 300+ and growing) is not worthwhile.
