Am I the Only One...

Posted by RoadLessTravelled on 16 March 2014 in English.

Who’s developed an automatic habit, of trying to remember any local mailbox / public phone / store or new sign spotted while driving to add to OSM later? This thing is addictive!

The nice thing is, that it stops you from just becoming blasé and not noticing the local area you live in. I find myself paying more attention and seeing more of where I live than I did when I first moved here.

Now, it’s time to go and add those public phones / mail boxes I memorized today…

Yes definitely.

I’ve taken to using my SatNav all the time when driving/being driven - mainly for recording random things seen whilst out and about - rather than for routing instructions (generally I know where I’m going!). Alternatively sometimes I video it instead but I don’t have a high def device only a cheap £40 one.

It helped when I learnt how to actually create a waypoint on the SatNav - for a Garmin Nuvi255 - just press and hold down on the screen saves a point where you are and name it.

Presently I seem particularly addicted to spotting historic milestones. osm.wiki/Tag:historic%3Dmilestone

Unfortunately they’re hard to spot (especially at night!) and on drive (or cycle) by you never have time to see the description on them.

Finding the sections that speed limits apply to is also one of my aims. Often - if I remember - I’ll check the speed limit map of where I’m going - http://www.itoworld.com/map/124?lon=-0.91523&lat=51.21377&zoom=12 to see if it needs improvement.

Yes, I quite enjoy checking on the speed limits as well. I use OSMAND which will warn me if I’m over the speed limit recorded in OSM, but sadly won’t tell me if I’m much under it.

Same here, and I just hope it is a good exercise for my terrible memory! :)

My best so far were seven house numbers in one go. Apart from that I try to memorize the all kinds of new/changed things to map them.

@Malenki - Impressive! I just got back from mapping a small shopping center near here, and have a fire hydrant, a bin and a postbox to enter that I spotted on thw way home… :)
