Panoramic views aka "Street View" on OSM?

RoadLessTravelled님이 English로 2014년 4월 9일에 게시함.

Hi there,

I’m interested in helping OSM to start towards some kind of street view like service, which seems eminantly doable now that Androids standard camera app, allows for super easy taking of panoramic, full spherical style images.

Just having some trouble figuring out the most effective place to upload these?

  • Theres opentrailmap.org, but then they only seem to want off road paths, parks etc.
  • There’s openlinkmap, but they only seem to be looking at adding this functionality at some time and even then they don’t seem to have anywhere to upload the images
  • there’s openstreetview.org which looks promising, but as though it’s been dead for years. Really this is the kind of thing I’m looking for, but is there anything more active?
  • Then there seems to be some discussion about adding to OSM directly with the tags image=File:example.jpg and image:panorama=yes where example.jpg is your file uploaded to wikimediacommons. This looks like the most logical and promising, but will anywhere actually display these? the image tag is also marked as controversial, so will it stick around?

So where would you think to add street level, “Street View” style images into OSM so they’re most likely to be useful?

You can also give Mapillary a try. It has specially allowed to use their images for OSM,and of course they are under CC-BY-NC.

I am pretty sure adding nodes/tags to OSM is the wrong approach, as the node (probably) does not represent anything in the real world.

OpenStreetView looks to have been active as soon as 8 months ago [1], what is the problem with the activity (or lack thereof)?

Well, my main issue with openstreetview is that I don’t want to put a load of time and effort into supporting something that’s going to be completely inactive and get no traction, and thus never be used for anything, especially if something else I don’t know about is getting traction as we speak.

I’m also unsure if OpenStreetView supports viewing panoramic images or just stills.

There’s http://mdl29.net/projets/open-street-view/ which got a bit of funding from french local touristic agencies. They have a bit of code for the viewer, but are also actively working on DIY hardware (using a phone has many drawbacks).

Progress isn’t very speedy and they don’t have a place to upload your own panos yet, but it’s still a promising project that could do with some extra help.

The only problem with OpenStreetView is that the code has not been progressed for a long time. There are plenty of people loading photos to it (particularly in Eastern Europe). If more people used it the process of curating photos would be a bit easier: last year I was uploading hundreds of photos which each needed 3 independent checks (because OSV is somewhat more stringent in how images are checked than some other places).

A really big improvement with OSV would be in how images can be accessed. Perhaps using leaflet with clustering would make it easier to browse the photos, and direct ability to pull OSV photo thumbnails into something like JOSM would be a massive step forward (rather than through a downloaded KML).

OSV also could do with something based on photo date: some images are 3-4 years old and might not be totally reliable sources.

Lastly I dont think we need 360 panorama photos of streets: much more useful for mapping would be strip photos of either side of the street. Some kind of tool which would ‘rectify’ images based on photographer position and a small number of control points on the images + stitching together would provide something different from Google StreetView and IMO more useful for mapping.

i thing not very usefull. and load time will be long if anyone from over the world upload an image. and this is maybe kill openstreet next.

map is only map, only give information where to go, panorama will be surprise if we have no look ing before….. even with image too.

want to adrenalin and surprise GET LOST without map is the choice. if you wanna HD view better going to be cinema.

dont be angry , just my opinion. keep smile …… :)

Try this: upload your pictures to Wikimedia Commons and tag them with the location template: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Location_dec This will produce a link to “commons on osm” (example: https://toolserver.org/~kolossos/openlayers/commons-on-osm.php?zoom=15&lat=53.08495&lon=8.80039&layers=B0000TFT ) and you can have a look at you and other pictures.
