OAuthCommunity request

Postitas Robert Copithorne kuupäeval 10. november 2017 – English.

“The OAuth 2.0 authorization framework enables a third-party application to obtain limited access to an HTTP service. “

I don’t understand why this is being requested, and why it applies to me. As far as I recall, I haven’t had to grant this authority on any previous uploadings on JOSM, or any other site.

Anybody who has some information, I would be pleased if you passed it on to me.

Thanks

JOSM used to have two sorts of user authentication, but I think now just has one. You used to be able to sign in with your username and password, or via the OAuth mechanism; the latter is now the only way. So there’s nothing wrong with this request, and it’s required in order for you to be able to upload from JOSM.

OAuth is a safer and more fine-grained (individual permissions like add notes, edit map) method of logging in. This way JOSM or whatever app doesn’t have to store your password, because it gets a key just for it to use. The added benefit is you can later revoke access to your account for an app without changing your password (in the settings at OSM.org).

This is like “log in with Facebook” - third party apps don’t know your password, but only the key Facebook login page returned to them.

Thank you, eddie0007. I hadn’t taken in to account that I was using Microsoft Edge for a new installation of JOSM on a different computer that I normally use. I can see that it would quite possibly have different login requirements when combined with the newest version of JOSM. I like Firefox, and use it on my regular computer, but tried using Edge with this new installation, to reduce the number of installed programs.
