If I want to place an amenity that isn’t one of the default potlatch ones it appears as unknown if I add it in the advanced section. Why is this?

There already is a tag amenity=nursing_home osm.wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dnursing_home
and amenity=retirement_home osm.wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dretirement_home
I guess which you use depends on the level of medical care provided (if any).
