This is probably better translated as "spot" rather than "corner". They are written the same in Hebrew.

You're more than welcome, and thank you for your efforts!

For the record, I have opened a discussion in the IL forum: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/bad-automated-translations/127581/2

For the record, two relevant discussions:

1. osm.org/changeset/163628695

2. https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/bad-automated-translations/127581/2

Another important point to consider is translation vs transliteration. For example, If we call this node "eye of the...", it would be a manufactured name and not a real one. It would be misleading since it's not a used name.

In this case, Transliteration may be better, i.e. "Ein Hik".

There are cases where transliteration is not suitable either. This is discussed here: osm.wiki/Names#When_to_avoid_transliteration

In my opinion, it's fine if you found a reliable online translation (a Wikipedia article for example), but I wouldn't suggest using Google Translate as a fallback

As for your question, as far as I know there's currently no automated way to properly handle translations. Especially for more distant languages or languages with less training data available.

You simply need a human who understands the context.

Thank you for understanding. I'll try fixing the ones in my region.

Thank you for your intentions, but using Google Translate is a terrible idea and is unacceptable. Google Translate does not understand local context and you have probably introduced numerous errors in English. Please do not use Google Translate for English names in Israel, and preferably not worldwide either!

I think you should stop making these worldwide automated translations. Many of them are simply wrong.

Hello. Were are you getting these translations from? They don't all make sense.

163620680 5 months ago

Hello. I don't think this is a good translation. I think it's more of "hidden lake".

Hello. You completely removed the Hebrew name. I think this is an error.

שלום, מחקתם לחלוטין את השם העברי של בית היערן. נדמה לי שטעיתם בעריכה.

2. אחד מהכבישים שנערכו נדבק בטעות לגבול של פארק הכרמל. תיקנתי את זה פה: osm.org/changeset/163244338

העריכה: osm.org/node/12635653429

הנה צילום מסך שמשווה בין תיעוד GPS לבין הרקע של BING לבין הכביש אחרי העריכה:

2. It seems that one of the track nodes you created is accidentally on the administrative boundary, I detached it from it: osm.org/changeset/163244338

Hello! Thank you for your edits. I have two comments.

1. I think you sometimes align existing tracks to Bing Maps. Please note that aerial imagery is sometimes slightly misaligned, and GPS can be more reliable. It's best not to move a track just because it seems slightly misaligned on Bing. For example, the way you moved the track around here seems to have made it less accurate: osm.org/node/12635653429

The name removal and bus stop displacement was an editing error. Thanks for pointing it out! Fixed in osm.org/changeset/163086510

As for the mix of Arabic and Hebrew `name` tags, this is intended. The place is rather multilingual. For example, some shops have a prominent Hebrew name on the sign and a secondary Arabic name or none at all, and some vice versa.

I physically survey the place and I choose the name tag according to what's the primary name on the sign, or, if that's missing, based on what's likely the local preference.

As for Carto's handling of that, here's a relevant reference: osm.wiki/Tagging_for_the_renderer

Basically, I don't really take Carto into account when tagging the names. I personally think there should be a separate Carto for each language. Vanilla Carto has always been confusing for multilingual places such as Israel, where language switches depending on the city you're looking at.

Thank you for the fix! These wrong "heb" tags were auto-added by StreetComplete. I should report a bug there.
