Position accuracy revised

Hi everybody,

in my blog of 4. Mai 2009, 18:18 I described an attempted to check the accuracy of my Garmin Etrex Venture HC by putting the instrument on a fixed position with a nearly unrestricted view on the horizon while it was recording this position at a sampling rate of 1 second for about 700 seconds. The standard deviations around the mean position of latitude, longitude and height were all about 1.5 m within the recording time. In the subsequent discussion it became clear that the recording time was to small because it comprised the time scale of turbulent atmospheric fluctuations but not the time scale of substantial changes in satellite positions. Therefore I repeated the measurements by taking 19 measurements of the same position within a 0.1 m radius each separated by at least one day. The result was different to my first attempt as expected. The standard deviations around the mean position of elevation was 2.3 m, of latitude was 2.0 m, and of longitude was 1.1 m, respectively. Assuming a Gaussian distribution of the sampled values the accuracy of a single statistically independent measurement would be with a probability of 67% within a sphere with a radius of about 2 m, with a probability of 95% within a sphere with a radius of about 4 m, and with a probability of 99% within a sphere with a radius of about 6 m. The error of a mean value is proportioanl to the inverse of the square root of the number of statistically independent measurements. Hence, it would require at least 10 statistically independent measurements (separated by at least 1 day) in order to obtain an accuracy of the mean position close to 2 m radius with 99 % probability. This gives an estimate of how many repeated statistically independent mappings of a particular object are necessary if a given accuracy shall be obtained.

GPS accuracy

Hi everybody,

I attempted to check the accuracy of my Garmin Etrex Venture HC which tells me to have an accuracy of about 3 m under favourable conditions. In order to do so I putted the instrument on a fixed position while it was recording this position at a sampling rate of 1 second for about 700 seconds. This file was extracted in GPX format and transformed by means of http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ into plain text format. This format can be read by MATLAB for processing the data.
The results were quite encouraging. The standard deviation around the mean position of latitude, longitude and height were all about 1.5 m within the recording time of about 700 s. This means that the accuracy given by the GPS navigator stands for the diameter of the error sphere with a probabilty of about 67%.
An other interesting result is the time scale at which the measured positions change significantly. This time scale I could estimate very roughly only because it is of the order of several hundred seconds. Therefore the performed test of 700 s duration was too short in order to obtain a reliable result. I am going to repeat the test with a longer record to obtain a more accurate result for the auto correlation time. However, the estimated order of magnitude of this time scale provides already now the conclusion that it requires at least a hour of position record for a reliable estimate of a mean position. Therefore it makes no sense to obtain a more accurate position by averaging them over say one minute, i. e 60 position measurements with a sampling time of 1 s.
A better method to average postion measurements of a GPS recorder is to repeat position measurements at the same location after a minimum time interval of at least 1 hour. These postion measurements are statistically independent and the error of the estimated mean position is proportional to the standard deviation divided by the square root of the number of statistically independed measurements.

Haltestellen der Rostocker Buslinie 36 entlang der Stadtautobahn und in Lichtenhagen mit GPS erfasst und kartiert. Diese Haltestellen in die Route 'Buslinie 36' der Rostocker Straßenbahn AG aufgenommen. Darüber hinaus Eckpunkte der Kleingartenanlage 'Am Güterbahnhof' in Warnemünde mit GPS vermessen und kartiert.

POI in Berlin und Warnemünde

In Berlin Bushaltestellen Usedomer Straße, Straßenbahnhaltestellen Eberswalder Str./ Pappelallee sowie in Warnemünde Recyclingstelle Neuer Markt, neuen Geldautomat der Commerzbank und neues Hotel 'Herr Ober' als POI mit GPS erfaßt und in Karte eingetragen.

Buslinien in Warnemünde

Die Route der Buslinie 37 komplett eingegeben und hochgeladen. Die Route der Buslinie 36 von Lichtenhagen über Warnemünde bis Diedrichshagen eingegeben und hochgeladen. Auf der letzteren Linie fehlen noch die Haltestellen außerhalb Warnemündes und die Streckenführung von Lichtenhagen bis Lütten-Klein.

Die Fährrouten Schaprode-Hiddensee eingegeben und hochgeladen.
