Too many Idiot-Mappers in Ecuador

Posted by Shakemasta on 28 June 2017 in English.

I’m only a tourist. I’m travelling in South-America and I am very happy to have map.me, so I can use offline maps. So I startet to add correct POIs here to give back something.

In recent times I visited Baños, Otavalo and Mindo.

WHY THE HECK in Otavalo there is a huge circle in the middle of a neighberhood pretending to be a train-station? How comes that in Cuicocha Laguna there is e Lodge in the Water?? Why do many hotels have to be twice on a map? One location is for sure not the right one. ettc, etc

I only could guess that mappers like Enrique1984, NOGGYS and others make such errors on purpouse. But I’m NOT SURE who it was. I’m no so advanced to really figure out who it was.

Does anyone has knowledge to stop such morrons?

Enrique1984 did 4 edits, all of them over a year ago. Perhaps he didn’t know his drawings were going live immediately after saving them ?

In general it’s best to reach out to those people in a friendly way, telling them how OSM works. However, when the user didn’t do anything for over a year, you just have to fix the problem.

There is nothing that can be done to overcome this problem. When there are enough mappers, each one monitoring an area, those problems will be picked up quickly. Unfortunately this will not work in a country with a small community.

I have noticed doubled-up hotels in Maps.me too. They look like they have been imported directly into Maps.me from Bookings.com as some sort of money-getting scheme. They are not editable in Maps.me, but they do not appear in OSM’s original data.

Think of them as unskippable adverts.

Even bright mappers sometimes may behave as idiots.

Humans make mistakes. Most of the time these are unintentional and a simple courteous contact would resolve the situation. The quickest thing to do is to fix it yourself, but the original mapper may continue to make the same kind of errors so contacting them can be useful.

I know a maverick, who continues his doings even though 95 % of the mappers disagree. We should have a way to vote, because this 95 % is just a guess.

Thank you everyone for the comments.

Regarding the wrong hotel entries by booking.com: Even on booking.com the entry is wrong. I’m still in Ecuador (Quito) and found out other hotels, which have a entry on the map, but when you are on site, there is no hotel at all. Therefore I wrote a comment to Map.me directly.

Regarding the fools doing wrong entries: I will suggest openstreetmap an additional entry-form. When I want to start mapping, I only have to wait a certain time and without instructions I can start fooling around. At this point there should be something like a waiver, where you have to accept the terms to map only true stuff and not fool around.
