More Addresses

SimonPoole님이 English로 2013년 7월 13일에 게시함.

Maybe some can remember that I produced some statistics on per country address counts end of March this year. I’ve rerun the scripts twice since then see http://qa.poole.ch/addresses/ .

What is naturally interesting is not so much the absolute number of addresses we have in the database (we know that we are just at the beginning of collecting addresses), but how fast are we adding them.

The full numbers can be seen on the website linked above, but for a quick comparison here are the overall numbers, Germany and the USA (which has had some address imports lately).

                2013-03-27 2013-05-03 2013-07-13 Increase since March
Total 20'168'470 21'072'447 22'939'124 13.74%
Germany 3'659'043 3'836'410 4'144'198 13.26%
USA 2'090'893 2'122'662 2'277'269 8.91%

While obviously the numbers are still quite small (the number for Germany is roughly 10% of all addresses there) I believe it is encouraging that we are adding substantial amounts even without large scale imports and do not depend solely on addresses becoming available as open data (which will not happen everywhere).

As always, one can interpret statistics in different ways… ;-)

If one assumes a roughly linear scaling, and Germany currently adds around 1% of addresses in 3 months, then it will still take about 20 years to add all addresses! And this is in Germany which is by far the most active community on a larger scale. Other countries aren’t doing nearly as well.

So one can probably uses those numbers quite convincingly to argue for address imports where there are good sources available. ;-)

Nevertheless, it is good to see that there is progress being made on the topic. One way or the other

Naturally I did the numbers too, but ~2 million addresses a year implies that we just started collecting them two years ago :-).

So yes, the current rate is too low for the Web 2.0 generation, but in all likelihood it is still increasing and we will just have to see where it levels out to the typical OSM linear growth mode.

114 million households in the US / 1650 addresses a day, US completed in 185 years. Not feeling that good about this.

The US is interesting because it shows that obviously (at least currently) imports are slower than simply collecting the addresses. But I suspect that large scale imports in the US are unavoidable.

Yes, large scale address imports are coming in the US because of the E911 system.

I think this shows that we need a lot more mappers, even in Germany. 20 years is much too long,

Hallo Simon, Ich trage dir für Österreich sofort mehrere hundert Adressen ein, wenn ich die Daten der Vermessungsämter benutzen darf. Für das Bundesland Oberösterreich wäre eine Übertragung sofort möglich, wenn die Behörden zustimmen. good work, and it shows we need more people to help with addresses.

Hi Simon!

This source [1] estimates 22 M addresses (and 38 M buildings in total) for Germany. If they are right, we almost reached 19% already. :-)
