Flash

Diposkan oleh Simonft pada 2 Mac 2009 dalam English

As this website seems to be mainly based in proving free and open-source content, it puzzles me as to why there is heavy use of Adobe Flash. This makes it impossible for the hardcore open-source junkies or the users of Linux on ppcs to contribute. While I understand that the use of Flash is easier for the developers, this should not be a problem since it would be even easier to simply use Google Maps. It would be interesting to me to hear the arguments for flash. I will end this rant by saying that regardless of Flash, this is a great idea and a great website.

Although I don't like Flash either, there is no reason to use Potlatch.

You could imagine this was even worse before Java was GPLed.

There's a million and one things I could say to that, but I'll just restrict myself to the one: Potlatch works with Gnash.

Flash isn't a requirement to use OSM - it's just one option, and for most people it's the easiest. I think the only technologies that are required are HTTP and XML, and beyond that you can take your pick of implementations. We've got flash (Potlatch), Java (JOSM), C (osm2go), C++/Qt (merkaator), perl (bulkuploader.pl).......

Also, if I remember correctly, Yahoo! gave explicit permission to use their aerial imagery for OSM. That may be one complication with using Google Maps.
