Yep, if it’s a business with a physical location, then sure. The number of businesses in the area really depends on how many local mappers the area has.

Hi Victor,

Businesses are welcome on OSM. There are just a few criteria for data to be allowed on OSM.

  • It needs to be static (or recurrent). So no temporary road blockages, movable stores, … Recurrent features (like a speed limit during school hours) can be mapped with special tags
  • It needs to be verifiable. So if you map a business, that business should be visible from the street. This also means that reviews or advertisements aren’t allowed.

As the business you want to add has an address, it’s probably signed, so it can be added.

I’d also like to add that map notes, note=, description=, and changeset comments are not for advertising copy. We have way too much of this pollution as it is, and there are people who go through every so often and clean up, or as I call it “de-rubbish”, note=* and description=*.

I never ended up adding to the map. I think I appreciate what you are doing with a wiki type map. My business is a real estate brokerage, and does not seem to be included in the type of map entries allowed (hospitals, bars, etc). I don’t want to spam the site, as described.

In my opinion, on this site, for the information to become of value to the user it needs to be adopted and contributed to by many users. The restrictive feel of the data inputs is not conducive to that.

If you have a physical office, that can be mapped, including contact information such as website, phone, email, etc. What’s considered spamming is adding a bunch of ad copy to the changeset comment, description=, note=, map notes, etc, or changing the street name to be the name of a business (actually that’s vandalism as well, and yes, some people have actually done this).

Hi Viktor,

Perhaps you’re right. On the other hand, we map more than businesses (also natural features, roads, buildings, …). And when it comes to businesses, there are some we go to more often (like shops and bars) than others (like factories and offices). So the shops and other “amenities” are easier to tag than factories or offices.

A real estate agent falls in the office category, so is hidden a bit more.

To map a real estate agent, choose the point feature in the editor Feature drawing

Add the point to the map, and search for “Office” in the side bar. This will add a generic office for which you can add a name, address, contact info, … To map it as a real estate agent, you can scroll down to the tags, and change the office type. tag overview

That was actually helpful. Thank you.

I was able to list my office. It took me a few seconds to find the “save” button, but all is good.

I also took a look around to see if there is any data that I could enter to add value. There are many trails in my area. They are already marked. I look at things like the school athletic fields. They are identified, but not by field number. That could add value, but I have a hesitancy to not modify what somebody else has already put in there.

No need to respond. Just my thoughts as somebody on the front end of the learning curve of wiki-stuff.

Thank you again. Paul

Oh, your name is Paul… right, sorry

I’m not sure what you mean by “Field number”. But if you think it’s valuable information, you can go ahead and map it. You shouldn’t be afraid to add stuff. I listed the only hard rules above, apart from that, it’s all just conventions we try to follow (without conventions, it would be very hard for data users).

If features have verifiable names or references, you can always slap on a generic name=*or ref=* tag (note that a name is not a description).

You may receive suggestions from other mappers in the region on how you’d better map something this or that way for this or that use case. But we’re normally very happy with any added information.
