University campus/buildings?

ToeBee님이 English로 2010년 4월 28일에 게시함.

I attended and now work for Kansas State University so I have a fair amount of personal knowledge about the campus. How do I enter this into OSM? The wiki page for amenity=university might as well not be there for all the information it contains, not to mention the fact that there is also talk of using amenity=education along with education=university.

Should buildings be traced as areas or marked as points of interest? (being new to OSM I'm still kind of fuzzy on buildings in the first place) What about the campus as a whole? KSU is nice in that it has a fairly well defined outline of land that belongs to the university. But it also owns several buildings throughout the city that are not on that land. What about universities in urban areas where there may not be a distinct campus, just buildings sprinkled around in an area? What tags are suggested to identify a university building? Should the tags indicate what specific academic and/or administrative department(s) reside in the building? For example, Hale Library is obviously a library but it also contains a lot of offices occupied by IT staff and it contains the university IT help desk which might be of interest to OSM users. Then there is the Student Union building that contains several fast food joints in the food court.

If there are conventions being used out there, please add them to the wiki page! If not... umm... I guess make some up real quick and THEN add them to the wiki! :)

> Should buildings be traced as areas or marked as points of interest?

If possible, they should be marked as areas (building=yes, name=XYZ).
Points are just for lazy people.

> What about the campus as a whole?

Should be marked as area (amenity=university, name=AAU).

> What about universities in urban areas where there may not be a distinct campus, just buildings sprinkled around in an area?

Should be marked as building (amenity=university, building=yes, name=XYZ).

The department of mathematics is a single building two blocks away from the university.

If one department is big enough to cover a little area, it my get its own little campus:

> What tags are suggested to identify a university building?

amenity=university, building=yes, name=XYZ

> Should the tags indicate what specific academic and/or administrative department(s) reside in the building?

Academic departments are often moving, so it makes sense to use the name of the building (e.g. N1)

Fast food amenities should be tagged separately.

Sorry, we are rather looking for good examples than reading conventions. It's your turn to describe how a good example looks like.

We don't follow simple instructions, we compete to create best solutions ;-)

For individual off-campus buildings, setting “building” to “yes” and “operator” to “Kansas State University” should suffice.

Go to the wiki and type 'campus' in the search box. You will find the site relation and some other helpful info.

The problem with using amenity=university and name=XYZ together is the implication to applications that use OSM that XYZ is the name of a university. See osm.org/?lat=51.52305&lon=-0.13277&zoom=16&layers=B000FTF for an example of the issue.

well the way I would do it is the outline of the building is marked as an area with
building=yes
building:use= university
building:name= what ever the name is
you can also add building:height= building:levels= and dont forget source=

now points can be placed inside this building shape to show where the fast food and other Academic departments are.

Toby,

You can see how I mapped Clemson University, under sadam, for a concrete example.

Cheers,
