Unnamed Highways

於 21 一月 2020 由 UyanEnglish發表。

Something I’ve come across numerous times during the validation process have been unnamed highways. Given how little experience I have mapping roads, I must say that I don’t know what the problem is. These highways are always tagged, but I’m guessing they’re missing their official name e.g. Blue Ridge Parkway.

I wouldn’t know where to get these names except from other mapping services, since if I understand correctly we should not use them as it is not first-hand data (open-source aiming to “build from from the ground up”). And I feel like I’m at the point where I can no longer simply brush off all these warnings, which might indicate that I need to step away from the validation process to take a crash course in road mapping. Perhaps it is that which will lead me down the road to riches.

Hi,

In some countries, there’s data sources you are allowed to use, in France we have BANO for this purpose of naming roads. Check the wiki for your place.

The principle of ground truth doesn’t imply that you can’t use third party data sources, only that the person on site knows better than any data provider. The trouble is that most data providers refuse the reuse of data, you can display it on their website and that’s it. If they think their data is used for OSM, they could sue the project…

So usually you have to go there and check the signs, or ask the neighboors…

If you can’t, it’s okay to ignore the warnings, others might do it later.

Good luck.

In the US there’s a TIGER Roads 2019 overlay for this purpose, containing the latest road names from TIGER (US Census Bureau) data. Sometimes these are wrong, and the original TIGER data at least has been known to have some weird inconsistencies (roads changing from X Street to X Avenue and back several times in a mile).

If you live near enough to it, you could always survey it, too.
