WOF#7.2 Import Guidelines

Parašė WorstFixer, laikas 2012 06 06, kalba English.

Hello.

Ich did a redraw of previous image.

Import Guidelines

Answers to some points:

@quantumstate: moving license change upwards will not help. If some one wants to import Google Maps data, it is fine to make converter. And make sure all tags are wikidescribed. But not fine to upload, which ist marked. If person can not look ahead on the list she deserves that.

@Gnonthgol: linear path ist for easy understaning. To make sure nothing falls off out mind. Before upload, you look at this again and check whole process following the arrows.

@LivingWithDragons note about revert ist from original import guide lines.

Ich think about giving numbers to blocks for easy reference. Need make sure community do not want add more blocks so numbers do not change.

Ich post link to this to talk@ and imports@ to discuss better.

A reply to your first point: It is important to check the license status of data early on in order to see whether you should be using the data at all. Why would someone want to import Google Maps data? That’s illegal unless you have proof that you got permission to use the data, which would be hard to do.

Before you put this on a wiki page, you should fix the spelling of “License.” It’s not “lincense” :)

“Check License” has to be number 2 just after “Find new data”. Why? If the data cannot be used for OpenStreetMap no further action needs to be done for OpenStreetMap. Because you’re describing a workflow for OSM here and not some workflow for some people wanting to play around with some data provided by some company under some restritive license.

As much as some might like it to be, nothing is really mandatory on OSM.

@chriscf: how is that so when people can get blocked for things they failed to do but were “mandatory?” LIke failing to discuss an import they would be making. That’s mandatory.

@chriscf If that’s so why did WorstFixer get blocked for failing to discuss imports/ scripts? Isn’t that “mandatory” to discuss?

whoops sorry didn’t mean to post the same comment twice. Thought my first comment didn’t go through.

Like any large society, OSM is a wonderfully diverse place. Unfortunately, one must take the rough with the smooth, which means occasionally dealing with someone who has a massive stick up their rectum.

And, dealing with stupid and inappropriate comments like Chriscf’s.
