141402069 | almost 2 years ago | Aside from above, the reason that I marked this area as access=no, is because it is currently scheduled for demolition, and it is surrounded by a tall chain link construction fence. I trust that this explanation is sufficient and that I don't need to run out and gather more photographic evidence as I did on the other changesets on the island that I reverted. I would appreciate in the future, if you would have a discussion when reverting recent edits if you are not personally putting your eyeballs on the thing you are changing. I live in this area and my edits are based on personally visiting these locations on the ground. |
141402069 | almost 2 years ago | Also, Bing Maps Aerial is the wrong imagery layer for this area. You should be using the March 2023 Rhode Island aerial imagery, which is the most up today. |
141402069 | almost 2 years ago | Please explain how you came to determine that this road is accessible. I personally surveyed it. |
141402001 | almost 2 years ago | Please explain this edit and how you came to assess that this street is accessible. |
140563540 | almost 2 years ago | This road has a sign at the end that reads: HARBOR VIEW DRIVE
Therefore I am restoring the private access tagging and mapping the gate and inscription. |
140978786 | almost 2 years ago | If you feel that this revert is still wrong, I would ask that you raise the issue on Slack (slack.openstreetmap.us), the community forum, or to the Data Working Group (data@openstreetmap.org), as an edit war would not be productive. |
140978786 | almost 2 years ago | Hi, You've removed a gate which I have personally surveyed. I've restored the gate because it was properly mapped and surveyed. Here is a photograph I took today:
Additionally the Newport municipal code defines "private road" in 10.08.01 as such: "Private road or driveway" means every way or place in private ownership and used for vehicular travel by the owner and those having express or implied permission from the owner, but not other persons." As such, "access=private" is appropriate for posted private roads. This is essentially the same definition you'll find in RI state law and also the common understanding that "private road" means that the general public is not permitted to enter. I've again restored the private road and gate. Please stop going around and removing private access tagging from private roads unless you have some strong evidence that these roads aren't private as posted. |
139895016 | about 2 years ago | Thanks for mapping buildings in Newport! There is also a #local-rhode-island channel on slack (https://slack.openstreetmap.us) where you can connect with other local mappers. |
139884906 | about 2 years ago | Oh, I think what you meant was just the little section to the east of the gate. That's fine - thanks for the edit. |
139884906 | about 2 years ago | Here is where you can see the private ownership:

139884906 | about 2 years ago | Can you explain this edit? This road is physically gated, and I checked the city of Newport records and it's entirely on private land. I personally visited this road. |
139011023 | about 2 years ago | Hi, the boundary of Kisko seems to be completely broken, are you able to fix this? |
139229344 | about 2 years ago | Hi 38`9832|-77`0278 and welcome to OpenStreetMap! It seems that you are running into some friction with other users. In general, the community will closely scrutinize bulk, wide-area additions of data and will have low tolerance for data errors from these types of additions, as you are experiencing. The solution is to vet bulk/imported data with the community first, either on Slack or on the community forums. Slack: https://slack.openstreetmap.us/ channel #imports Forum: https://community.openstreetmap.org/ Unfortunately, engaging with the community does require additional steps, but that's the price of introducing larger amounts of data using bulk techniques. I would caution you to avoid "edit warring", as that is likely to cause other users to report your edits to the Data Working Group (DWG), who can issue blocks on your user accounts. In general, the DWG tends to side against users that import data without discussion. Hopefully we will see you on Slack or the community forums. Feel free to ping or message me in any space if you would like to chat further. |
135010243 | about 2 years ago | OSM uses the "on the ground rule", and this county is known as South County on the ground. |
138526663 | about 2 years ago | Just wondering if name=الخليج العربي (seems to translate to Arabian Gulf) was the intended result of this repair. |
138163832 | about 2 years ago | Ok, thanks. If you're physically sighting street signs, you can put "survey" as the source, and if the data is coming from somewhere else, that should be listed also. Otherwise someone might assume you're copying from Google Maps or some other copyright source. |
137856759 | about 2 years ago | Can you elaborate? |
138163832 | about 2 years ago | Can you clarify what's meant by "updating based on actual road"? Where are the road names coming from in each of these changesets with that comment? |
137856759 | about 2 years ago | Hi - how did you come to these road names? I've been on and around St. George's campus many times and I've never seen any of the roads signed with a name. |
