Cleaning up admins

I’m looking through the OSM database and finding a lot of weird quirks in the admin_hierachy. There are lots of things that are tagged admin_level=2 that I don’t think are quite right. If you get a message from me, it might be because of that.

Good luck with tidying. If you start considering whether the correct admin level has been added to ways that are in multiple relations, I have a report for the British Isles - the errors you can perhaps ignore as I think they are where political boundary relations have been added as subareas of administrative boundary relations.

Also ignore the “unnecessary tag” bit - it seems Mapnik still needs the highest level admin value on the ways for rendering if I’ve understood this discussion correctly.

Cool. I’m helping to map and process some of the Irish historic boundaries at townlands.ie

Hello rorym,

please be aware that administartive boundary relations are under a permanent review process by some OSM experts.

See for example osm.wiki/User:Wambacher (scroll down there)

and try his tool https://osm.wno-edv-service.de/boundaries/

If you have issues with some borders, why not starting a thread at the OSM forum?

Hi @stephan75, Thanks for your concern. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough, but I’m only looking at admin_level=2’s, i.e. countries. There are a few badly tagged ways/relations which aren’t really admin_level=2 (e.g. osm.org/way/259259040 ).

ATM I’m just messaging the people who mapped those things.
