North East Greenland

andershl님이 English로 2019년 4월 5일에 게시함.

I have imported some 4500 place names for North Eastern Greenland - most if it an uninhabited national Park - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_Greenland_National_Park

The names are all points, so you are all invited to assist in finishing the job of assigning the names to the correct landscape features.

The source database, the change sets, How and why, written permission etc. can all be seen at http://xoz.dk/public/nordost

I have myself fixed the majority of islands. Most just need the name assigned to the existing outline and the temporary point deleted.

For most of the rest the outline first have to be closed (so far beyond my skills) or established.

All assistance is welcome.

There are two changeset discussions related to this:

osm.org/changeset/68256914 osm.org/changeset/68269698

which already contain a few significant points on the matter. In particular

  • the importance of diligence on the legal aspects
  • the selection of fitting tags for the features
  • the need for conflation with existing data to avoid duplicates.

In general North Eastern Greenland has seen a significant amount of mapping during the past 1-2 years by 4rch moving it from one of the worst mapped areas of Greenland to one of the most accurately mapped. If you map physical geography there please don’t use the 20 year old legacy images you get in Bing and other global image layers, use either the Greenland mosaic i prepared:

http://maps.imagico.de/#map=6/73.428/-23.093&lang=en&l=greenland&r=osmim&o=2&ui=8

which is available in all common editors or any newer open data imagery (from Sentinel-2 or Landsat 8) plenty of which is available (though requires custom preparation).

@andershl It’s normal practice where there are major problems with an undiscussed import (as here) to completely revert it and allow the discussion to take place first as should have happened in the first place.

As an analogy, imagine if two people were working collaboratively on a painting - it would be extremely demoralising for someone to throw some pots of paint at the canvas and say “you’re welcome to incorporate that too!”.

Yep, fully agree: The geography is not to be challenged. What was missing was assignment of names to the different places.

Thus the imported points “this sound is called bla-bla-bla”, identify it as a sound and assign the name, then delete the point..

That is.

Which is also the reason why the descriptions are included.

So: Participate.

PS: There ARE instances where cabin/hut locatinos seem to be in the water. For those data evaluation MAY imply that coastlines MIGHT be reconsidered - or I THINK the chance that coordinates were taken by the cabin are higher than coordinates were taken along the coastline.

This is not helpful and must be removed. OSM notes are not a vehicle to transport “some information that may or may not be useful to the mapper”, and an import that goes “you are all invited to assist in finishing the job” is exactly the kind of import that damages the map.

The data can be useful - put it in a shape file, and everyone can load it in their editor and copy names to osm FROM THE SHAPEFILE instead of from imported nodes.
