During another trip to Turkmenbashy to attend the 9th Annual Gas Conference, I took a few hours to collect more GPS traces and Mapillary ground imagery in and around Turkmenbashy, including the seaport dedicated on May 2. The updates to the seaport are uploaded now–additional roads, placement of important terminals (including the passenger and ro-ro terminals), and tweaks to the approach roads.

We also geolocated the Kazakhstan and Russian consulates in Turkmenbashy, which means we now have all diplomatic and consular missions in Turkmenistan on the map, complete with addresses and telephone numbers. We located and collected contact information for the three downtown hotels (Charlak, Hazar, and Turkmenbashy), i.e., those not located in the Awaza tourist zone.

I also started a wiki page on the city of Turkmenbashy, as a companion to the pages on Turkmenistan, and cities of Ashgabat and Mary. All of these are far from finished, so please be patient as I collate information and upload it. If you have suggestions or criticism or thoughts on these pages, please sing out!

By the way east of Turkmenbashy is one of the largest errors in the coastline data in OpenStreetMap at the moment with the position being off in parts more than 20km. The current mapping of the coastline in the area dates back about seven years (osm.org/changeset/9124248) and was nothing more than a quick sketch even back then.

Variable water levels of the Caspian Sea make mapping a bit tricky but there is plenty of interesting and severely undermapped geography there - like:

Actually, the entire coastline in and around Turkmenbashy appears to be a mess, with water on land in several places. Fixing it is beyond my meager capbilities–one of the Jedi masters of JOSM needs to take on that task, I fear.

Coastline editing is actually not that difficult, especially if you only move and add nodes. What can be irritating is that you do not get an immediate update in the map (and in the past two months the coastline updates were completely stuck).

So the main rules for coastline editing are: Don’t break it and ignore how it looks on the map. Useful visual feedback you can get from the OSM Inspector water view (with 1-2 days delay):
