What can I say, got E66 month ago; one thing leads to another, and here I am.

Been recording my walks around home area for few days now, collecting GPS data for the basis of tuning the map nearby. After looking at it I realized it sure needs some "fixing". Wonder where all those imaginary bus stops appeared from, lol. And someone has added a POI (or some such) for a local bar, but not for the cash machine. Huh. Usually the needs for them tend to go hand in hand.

While looking at the tracks I now noticed I'd better keep the phone in my hand instead of in the pocket. When I held it in my hand in front of me, the tracks look really smooth, e.g. tops 1-2m deviations from straight line when walking along straight street with no buildings blocking the sky. When in pocket, the track goes 5-10m here and there in less than 10-20 secs.

If I continue recording the walking trips like now, I should be ready to start mapping in a week or two.

Welcome to OSM! Yes, it's true about keeping the GPS out of your pocket, I found the same.

I find it easiest to map what I have done soon after I make the traces, so that I can remember what things looked like, whereas mapping lots of older traces in one go, sometimes I can't remember things so well.

For starters (a warm up, so to speak), I am only aiming to edit the accurate locations of some streets/paths, and add/remove some features I know well (been living here for 4 years now), so the remember -part isn't problem - yet. Also, I intend to write down some notes when I do the "final" walk all-over; that is, when I have collected enough data for accurate positions. The majority of tracks are now coming as a side-effect of walking different routes between home, to-work bus-stop, from-work bus-stop, and a local (and a not-so-local) grocery store.

For the accuracy, I need to walk through each section at least 2 times (to get assurance that the tracks are indeed correct), and those sections that are between/near buildings at least 5 times (to cut the deviations into nice average).

After the street/path mapping process I'll try and figure out how to get the yahoo aerial images and add some buildings and perhaps other "terrain" features (if I understood right, that process was allowed by Yahoo).

Once I get the immediate local area mapped "right", I need to adjust my tracking/mapping process to better suit areas that I do not know that well. My memory most certainly isn't up to the job when its about things I've only experienced once.
