apparently the gzipped ones with photos didn't upload, si I'lll have to do them over with just gpx

Gzipping the gpx doesn't _include_ the photos in it. And even if it did you wouldn't want to upload the photos to OSM. OSM is not for hosting the photos itself.
Gzip is just a compression format, not a container format like .zip.

I misunderstood the "load Photo" option. I thought that was what that was for. Can OSM point to a photo from a location?
