Re: lcn tagging in Cambridge

Just tag what you find on the ground. If it is signed as a local, named or numbered route tag it as such. Just to be clear - don't copy a route from another copyright source. Have you seen the Cycle Map (blue and white '+' top right)?

We're making a map here

We're definitely not making *a* map. There are over a many thousands of regular contributors, with widely different reasons for contributing. The data in the database and its accessibility is what makes OSM so valuable to many people, some of whom will use the data without ever producing a map.

Antartica in effect

Will you be visiting them with your GPS?

Frustration

Kosmos is an alternative renderer for Windows http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Kosmos.

New announcements mailing list

There is an OSM twitter feed http://twitter.com/openstreetmap

Garmin update.

Write a poem and use it to spread the word about OSM. There have been poetry competitions in OSM in the past. Everyone's constructive contribution is very welcome.

EGNOS now Live

I've seen the D on and off and got down to 6 feet briefly a few times over the last few months while the testing has been taking place. The EGNOS birds are geostationary, unlike all the standard GPS sats, so you need a clear view of the southern sky to see the EGNOS improvement. They come up as sat 33 and 37 on my Garmin and I never get a full lock on them, apparently this is how the WAAS function works. I just tried outside and got 28ft with both EGNOS sats visible. They do give a better position sometimes, and work better the further south you are in Europe. Roll on Galileo.

Large forests with residential areas

cantece: that's not what layers are for in OSM. They help roads, railways, rivers etc. that cross be shown correctly.

xxlbiker: To show an area within another you need to use the multipolygon relation. It lets you create holes in areas, to insert another one. natural=wood or landuse=forest won't make much difference for this problem.

Diary Entry

With all those bodies you should hold a mapping party. ;-)

Ajout de rues sur ANGERS

It's always better to see what is really there rather than just trace from aerial photos, so much more to see as you have found. Sorry for the English reply, my schoolboy French is poor.

Bon chance avec votre travails.

Hackerspaces map

The link to TOG in Dublin is malformed.

Bolton looking very spartan - plea for assistance

GPS units are available for loan, esp. for mapping parties.

More on UK rights of way

barrieu: You're ignoring the fact that councils have an obligation to sign public rights of way. That doesn't mean a sign at each end of a route with miles of unsigned bits between, but they must put up markers or signs at every point there is a reasonable choice. East Riding of Yorkshire council do this fairly well and respond to emails asking for signs to be repaired, much to the annoyance of a few land owners. Putting pressure on a council is no harder than sending an email, though they may need more than that in the end. The FoIA allows anyone to ask questions about the records that councils hold, so ask them (by email) what records they hold about maintaining PRoW signs and access. They have 20 working days to respond, after which you then have astick to beat them with if they are not adequately maintaining the signage and access. Try it. It could be the way to get exactly what you want.

barrieu: The councils in England have a legal obligation to sign public rights of way and maintain access to them. Two signs, many miles apart with alternate routes is not adequate. If you have problems contact your council to remind them of their obligations. Also, try asking them (under the Freedom of Information Act) for records of their maintenance of footpath signs and access. This will then show if they are doing as they should. Imaginative use of the FoIA seems to be very effective.

antonys: If the internal map is based on an OS map, OS will claim copyright. I resent this, but without a court case (which OSM cannot afford) to decide if this is a justified claim we must accept it.

I think it is a reasonable assumption that if a council (who maintain the DM) puts up a sign that says 'Public Footpath', pointing along a path, then that path is public footpath.

First input!

You're very welcome. Lincolnshire and Lincoln needs your help.

Rural footpaths: Public Rights of Way

If the path is not marked or is not maintained, report it to your council, maybe more than once. They have a legal obligation to maintain the marking and access to public rights of way. You are then helping other fellow walkers whether they use OSM or not.

You don't have to doggedly trace the route from your GPS. Extending routes that are obvious, but temporarily blocked, for example by crops, is legitimate. Photos help to remember the situation later. Tag it source=extrapolation.

We can all campaign for the release of definitive data help by public bodies but that has copyright claimed by the Ordnance Survey. Write to your council, your MP, your local newspaper, radio station and TV station.

If you think any of this matters, don't just give in.

Google Street View

We saw a Google car driving around last October as we were mapping part of East Yorks. Streetview has yet to show up here.

OSM features

You can export HTML to embed in your blog or web page from the export tab on the main map. This can have markers added as you export it.

Railway Tagging

Hack, but not terrible. Platforms are platforms, not highway=pedestrian. Use the tag railway=platform (already in map_features) and either change the renderers to render it yourself or ask (via the mailing lists) that someone else do it. Then encourage routing program authors to include it since platforms are clearly an important transport interchange.
