As Sod's Law would dictate, this would of course occur as I'm about to press the button in the editor of choice to commit about 45-60 minutes' work to the API.

JOSM has a "repair" function.
It sometimes complains when I didn't shut it down the right way, but when I had a thing like you had, JOSM could find my data back (it has happened 2 times now).

UPS, even a small VA (like 450) - is a must.
