Hello, welcome to OpenStreetMap! I saw you changed this road to highway=service; however this road is not right for this tag. It is intended for roads in parking lots, driveways, etc. See the wiki for more info: osm.wiki/Tag:highway=service?uselang=en

What would you define as consensus then?

111940505 almost 4 years ago

Regarding consensus, I strongly encourage you to check out the discussions at slack.openstreetmap.us.

>Going from trunk to primary isn't a reduction in importance, it's a reduction in the road.

Yes it is, trunk roads are more important than primary roads by definition.

Also, tagging short segments of road as trunk just because it happens to be divided (or a super-two) for like a mile or two is just as bad as when people tag expressways as a motorway for like a mile or so just because there happens to be one interchange. Also, if a road is primarily built as an expressway but becomes undivided in a town, it should still be tagged as trunk. The road's importance is *not* reduced when it goes thru a town.

I know I've mentioned this multiple times on the talk-us mailing list but it bears repeating: the wiki states that only highway=motorway implies anything about the physical state of the road, whereas the other highway=* tags are not. The consensus in the US tagging community seems to now be that trunk roads don't necessarily need to be expressways. Please use the expressway=yes tag for expressways.

Hi there, none of those roads that you tagged as trunk actually meet the definition of a trunk road. Trunk roads are generally any road that is a divided highway without interchanges or a two-lane road that connects major cities. The roads you tagged as trunk really should be tagged as service roads for the most part. I would really appreciate it if you fixed this.

Also, please actually provide a changeset comment to explain to other mappers what changes you've made to the map. This is way more helpful than just typing a period in the description box.

Can you please explain why US 95 isn't a freeway between just south exit 438 and just north of exit 446? It clearly looks like one to me, and is certainly long enough.

Are you on the OSM-US Slack channel? Would be happy to discuss this and get other peoples' input on there. There certainly isn't an agreement on the minimum length of motorway segments in the US.

106846278 about 4 years ago

The rule I mentioned is like the minimum standard for the US, as I'm certain that most people would think that it's improper tagging to upgrade a trunk to motorway if it has one interchange sandwiched between at-grade intersections. Now that I think about it, people have different ideas of what the minimum number of interchanges needed for a trunk to be upgraded to motorway.

Also, for the example you provided, do note that the UK doesn't tag A roads as motorway even if they're fully grade-separated; they only tag M roads or A(M) roads as motorway, so that's different than the US.

Looks like this should be motorway to me.

106926050 about 4 years ago

Again, please explain why you feel this should be trunk. There don't appear to be any at-grade intersections, so it should be changed back to motorway. Thanks!

107041588 about 4 years ago

Where are the at-grade intersections on this road? I don't see any, so it should be changed to motorway.

106846278 about 4 years ago

Can you also please explain why you downgraded the Everett Bypass from motorway to trunk? It has two consecutive interchanges, so that's generally considered to be sufficient for a road to be motorway.

Really would be helpful to explain this in your changeset comment, especially when this road has been tagged as motorway for years. Thanks!

Can you explain why you downgraded US 22 from motorway to trunk between Ebensburg and I-99?

To me, it seems like a long enough segment that is a freeway for this section to be tagged as a motorway.

103209735 about 4 years ago

Hi, I noticed that you upgraded some roads from trunk to motorway where there was one interchange sandwiched between at-grade intersections. In case you weren't aware, freeways should have multiple consecutive interchanges in order to be tagged as a motorway. You can't just upgrade a short stretch of road to motorway just because there's an interchange there.

Is this new ramp from I-26 EB actually open? Currently, the way you have it shows it as just a dead-end.

107233967 about 4 years ago

No problem; it's iD's fault for making it too easy to accidentally drag nodes.
BTW, OSMCha is a really helpful website that gives people a more in-depth look at how things changed in a changeset, and is what showed me where Der Man Shoppe was before you moved it.

107230267 about 4 years ago

No problem, I've fixed it now.

107230267 about 4 years ago

It looks like you moved Der Man Shoppe by mistake, as it is now in the middle of Waterfront Park. Can you please try and fix it?

Thanks!
