Hello, I have noticed that there are a large amount of Mapnik bugs that are several years old but are not resolved. What is up with this? Why haven’t they been fixed??

I understand that there are a limited amount of people with programming experience, but seriously, it’s crazy that we have bugs that are 4 (or more) years old. I know that you programmers have lives outside of OSM (at least I hope you do ;) ) but it doesn’t make sense to have such old bugs in Mapnik. A lot of these bugs are things I really would like to see rendered and fixed in Mapnik.

I would love to help but I don’t know much about programming and it would probably take me a year or more to learn whatever language is used in the Mapnik API. I would hope that these things would be changed by then…

So I would ask those programmers to look through the list of bugs and find the oldest ones and start fixing the most critical issues.

I also think that going forward, a standard should be set that a bug should not go more than 6 months (or a year tops) without being resolved.

PS: It isn’t just mapnik that has super-old bugs; even Potlatch 2 has some 3 year-old bugs.

I edited several areas fixing the coastline a while ago. I first fixed the coastline here to make it not look jagged. That was over two months ago, but it still hasn’t been re-rendered. I know it was saved because the coastline doesn’t look jagged when you go and edit.

This is not the only place where this is going on. Nearby, I edited another bit of coastline that was inaccurate. See what I’m talking about here. West of the marina, the coastline is supposed to follow the purple dotted line, but the renderer has failed to update this coastline which I edited more than a month ago. Again, it is where it’s supposed to be when you look at the data layer, and in Potlatch.

But wait, there’s more! I edited another bit of coastline 3 weeks ago (Jan. 14) to make it not look like there were a bunch of roads floating on the water, as shown here. Still hasn’t updated.

I put in a render request on http://www.informationfreeway.org a few days ago, but I don’t think that helped at all. I even edited the coastline a bit just to see if that would get the renderer to do its job. If either of those things worked, I’d not be posting here. Has anyone else had this problem or do OSM’s servers just hate me? Someone please fix this, because this is unacceptable and should not be happening.

The OSM redaction has finished its thing in my city, Seattle, WA, USA. It’s worse than I expected, in part because I underestimated the impact that node edits would have on the map. That means a lot of the ways now look all whacko because the nodes are all over the place. But compared to places like Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia it looks fine. One area that’s the worst is this: osm.org/?lat=47.5623&lon=-122.2948&zoom=14&layers=M I’ll probably spend most of my time cleaning this area up, but I’ve been just browsing around looking for stuff that looks messed up. It’s kinda boring and tedious, but I’m glad that another mapper and I were able to remap any ways affected by the license change beforehand. Nonetheless, there are still a few missing ways, but those are just stubs that have to be re-added.

My annoyance at the redaction bot subsides when I think of all the stuff that it’s gobbled up in Australia…

EDIT: Actually the damage is worse than I thought: there weren’t any deleted ways, but there’s a lot of whacko-crazy ways like this and this. I am working to fix this kind of stuff.

Holy crap, the new server is AMAZING! I just did a bunch of edits (not all in one changeset) and once I saved them and clicked “View” my changes were visible already. That is amazingly fast, and I can only remember one other time where this happened.

I was looking at the OSM Inspector in my area and found that there was a LOT of coastline (and I mean A LOT) of coastline added by a user who hasn’t accepted the new license. This link gives you just a small sample of what I am talking about, zoom out to see more. I sent the user a message and he replied expressing much dissatisfaction with the new license. We all know what that means: A large amount of coastline will be gone in two days, and there’s no way it’s going to be remapped in that short amount of time.

So what do I do to salvage that coastline? I see that there is this odbl=clean tag which basically prevents these kinds of ways from being deleted but I’m unsure about whether to use it. So any suggestions on what I should do about this?

There’s all this talk of people finishing remapping their area and I haven’t even started on my city Seattle! Looking at cleanmap and seeing all the stuff that will go away after the license change (which AFAIK is on April 1st, one week from now) is just overwhelming. I’m not sure how to start, so could those of you who have finished up their area please give me some advice on how they went about it, and perhaps help me get my area taken care of? That would be wonderful. Thanks!

Is anyone besides me annoyed at the fact that the Save button was moved to the opposite side of the edit window, right underneath the view button? Has anyone besides me clicked the Options button instead of the Save button? And has anyone clicked the view button and found themselves having lost all their changes? (That almost happened to me, except Awesome Firefox warned me my changes would be lost if I continue.)

Anyway, my point is that the Potlatch developers should move it back how it was before, because it really was better on the right side of the page. Right is another way of saying correct, so moving it back would be the correct thing to do.

I was wondering why there's so many TIGER-related tags on roads uploaded via the TIGER import in the US of A. A lot of them seem to have little purpose, and the only ones that seem to have any chance of survival in life (i.e. won't get deleted by me) are the tiger:county=* tag and the tiger:reviewed=* tag. There's also the tiger:separated=* that I'm wondering about it's purpose.

Could someone more knowledgeable than I answer these questions?
- What's the point of the TIGER tags?
- What's the tiger:separated=* tag for?

I had a little question about Potlatch 2. If you've been editing for a little while, up at the save button appears something in parentheses that says "(5m)" or (10m). What the heck does this mean? Does it mean I've wasted, say, ten minutes of my life editing stuff? I don't think that's the case because it doesn't appear when I've only been editing for one minute.

So could someone please tell me what that means?

I don't know if you've heard already, but I recently noticed that Google introduced its Map Maker into the US. Unfortunately, I think it's kind of a bad imitation of OSM. Though it follows much of the same concept as OSM, I noticed some shortcomings to it:

* You have to get your edits reviewed before it appears on the map. Also, if you edit a road that connects to a road that hasn't been reviewed, it won't even let you edit that road, which can be kind of annoying.

* The UI is not as user-friendly as Potlatch2. It seems to take a few extra clicks to go from just browsing/ moving around and selecting roads/ other items.

* When tested on an old computer, Map Maker was really, really slow. Potlatch 2 is way faster (though it does lag a little) than Map Maker, meaning P2 runs smoothly on a wider range of computers.

Though there are these shortcomings to Google Map Maker, there are a few things I like about it. For example, the road designations may be easier to understand by users in the US as it is actually concieved in the USA rather than Great Britain.

Also, google map maker is more well known than OSM, meaning it may attract more attention and steal the limelight from OSM. I don't want this to happen, so I want to spread awareness for OSM by maybe even placing ads on google maps. THat would be killer!

It seems that there has not been enough effort to fix bugs in Mapnik. Anyway, I was looking thru the Mapnik bug reports and found a couple bugs that were reported more than a year ago and STILL have not been fixed. Yes, I know that there's never been enough OSM developers, but the fact that there's unfixed bugs reported more than a year ago is just unacceptable. A few bugs I have found were ones that I'm sure many of you have noticed.

*One is the fact that bridge layers aren't rendered correctly for roads other than motorways and motorway_links. This bug report (http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/1931) was created 19 months ago! Its the oldest one I've found regarding this issue, and I'm surprised this issue STILL hasn't been fixed.

*Another bug I've found is the fact that river names aren't displayed for rivers, even though the name was entered in the name=* tag. This bug report (http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/2514) about this issue was opened 13 months ago, and this issue still isn't fixed.

I'm sure there's other rendering bugs that are this old, but these are the ones that I've found are most annoying. So if you have any programming experience, PLEASE lend your efforts to fix these bugs! If you have any spare time, try and fix these bugs. Your efforts will be appreciated

I just got a chance to mess around with potlatch 2 in the Edit tab. It's great! The previous version, Potlatch 1.4, was slow, full of bugs and hard to use. Now this is a WHOLE lot easier to use, especially if you're a new user. I like the fact that it shows examples of what certain roads look like, esp. trunk roads.

For all those who helped create Potlatch 2, thx for your hard work in making potlatch faster, easier to use, and less bugs.

One question i have though: why is it not the default editor to appear when you click the edit tab? why is potlatch 1 still coming up? you have to click and hold your mouse on the edit tab in order to select it. Please fix this so the previous version of Potlatch no longer appears.

I just downloaded JOSM not long ago, along with the YahooWMS plugin. I have tried using it, but have noticed that the imagery appears to be pixelated and when I zoom in, the imagery doesn't automatically reload in a higher resolution like I'd expect it to. I tried right clicking on the "Yahoo Sat" layer (in the layers panel on the right) and I clicked change resolution, thinking that would make it load a higher-res image. I clicked that and waited, but nothing happens. I don't see why this has to be lower resolution than the SAME yahoo imagery in Potlatch.

Is there a setting I need to change somewhere, or is this a bug? I'm not using a beta version of JOSM. Please let me know.

PS. What was with the server yesterday afternoon? I went to OSM at 6pm PST (pacific standard time) yesterday and it took way longer to load pages and it took an unreasonable amount of time to upload a small changeset (6 nodes, 3 ways) in Potlatch. Was there a REALLY BIG edit/upload going on and slowing the servers down?

I just uploaded some new rivers a few days ago. I entered their names in a "name=" tag, but the names aren't displayed in mapnik. Even when I zoom in all the way, I still don't see the river names. But I noticed they are displayed in Osmarender.

What's up with that? Why does Mapnik only display the names of streams and not rivers? Please tell me why and if there's another tag I could use.

I accidentally posted a bunch of diary entries that were all the same. But when I tried to figure out how to delete them, I found no delete button. I'm very infuriated that there's no way to delete my own diary entry. Why is this?

Is there a way to delete it that I'm not seeing? If so, could someone PLEASE tell me how?

I've been using the Yahoo satellite imagery in Potlatch to edit things and have found it very useful. However, I've also found that it's pretty old (from 2006). Is it going to be updated any time soon? That would be really nice if it gets updated because then I'd be able to map roads that have been built since '06.
