i am new to all this, and have updated 3 new roads that i know to be confirmed. How long does it take for these to show on the map?
i am armed with a satnav and a good pair of eyes and can get naming those london roads!!

Not too long.
The main culprit is usually your browser having a stale cache of the old tile images. Try refreshing the slippymap with shift held down.

Osmarender is faster, but it takes a while to get updated. After all it has to regenerate the tiles.

Hi Dan - not so long ago ( May / June 09 ) updates were every Wednesday - now 24 hours seems about the norm
