Stuck with a dinosaur.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S GT 19000 bought two years ago with the notion of using it also as a tracker. It requires inputs from three sources to work as a GPS device: Signals from the phone provider, the GPS-Satellites, and local WLAN transmitters/Receivers. The consequence is that it reasonably works in areas of high population and along the motorway. It does not work in a reasonable manner in any other type of area; e.g. forests, hills, or any countryside where the above three signal sources are partially unavailable.

Note: I was comparing my Samsung with my friend’s iPhone 3 at the time. It was worse than the Samsung.

My Samsung does become useful for OSM purposes when I use OSMAnd+ but that is another story.

For OSM tracking I have a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx from 2008 and it is very accurate in most cases. It probably still is one of the better models for OSM data collection. Unfortunately the ideal GPS device for OSM has yet to be developed. One with an integrated camera and a voice recorder. (There is one Garmin device with an integrated camera available).

You may be able to buy a second-hand GPS device on eBay.

You can always use walking-papers. I do!

Es könnte alles so perfekt sein...

  1. manche Potlachnutzer machen ständig fertige sachen (unbeabsichtigt) kaputt.

Nur ganz kurz was nachschauen oO

You did the right thing. The cat had priority. Sorry about the wound.

Yorkshire to Cyprus

Have a nice time in Cyprus: Perhaps you could try and fill in some of the gaps in the E4 Europeon Long Distance Path:

http://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/de/?zoom=10&lat=34.97119&lon=33.06176

As you say there is a lot to do in Cyprus but don’t forget: Your on holiday!

Hint: You can get free and good maps from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation: You have to ask for them as they are not on display!

I have entered a couple of their locations in OSM but there are many more not yet mapped but you can find their locations by googling

“CTO Information Office”

Include the apostrophe.

Have fun!

Tracks

Ich habe ein Samsung GT-I19000 Galaxy. Vor 2 Jahren war es die Flagschiff Modell von Samsung.

Ich habe auch ein Garmin GPSmap 60Csx von 2008. Damals Flagschiff Modell von Garmin.

Meine Erfahrung entspricht das was stanton sagt.

Zwecks Festlegung der Coordinaten braucht Samsung drei Quellen;

  1. Sender/Empfangsstelle dein Internet Provider

  2. Lokale WiFi Stationen

  3. GPS Signale

Quellen vorhanden.

a. In offene Gelände ) +/- 3 Meter oder besser.

b. In Wald meistens +/- 4 Meter

c. In Berge meistens +/- 10 Meter

d. In Städte leider nicht so gut. Hängt von Gebäudetyp / Höhe usw. Glass reflektiert Signale. Aber ausreichend.

Go Map!! now available in the App Store

Any chance of an Android version?

1 million is a big number

@Rovarstar

Let us not emulate other sites behavior culture. Let us do it our way!

I know I am repeating myself when I say that we are not discussing those uses who have contributed data to OSM. My main point is those who register, don’t do anything and want to unregister. LET THEM DO IT in an easy and simple manner.

As @Harry Wood mentions above the system administrators were able to delete 2000 accounts and that must have costs them a lot of time just to define them as spam accounts.

How much effort went into the licence change which culminated in the deletion of many accounts.

Obviously Harry Wood does not agree with my arguments so let us leave it at that. Harry you doing a good job. Keep it up. I have great respect for you.

1 million is a big number

To Harry,

I love your enthusiasm. Just the way it should be. Please carry on.

Maybe I am confused/wrong or just stupid. True is: The majority of registered users have not contributed anything to OSM in the form of data or services (i.e. the back-room guys without whom none of this would work. They must get the most praise from me).

We are not discussing those users who wish to hide their identity by destroying their account, but those who register for the first time without knowing what is expected of them. When realization kicks in and they decide OSM is not for them (many reasons here) they cannot easily close a registered account.

I far as I understand it and I may be wrong, the only way to close an account is to contact an administrator and ask them to do it for you. Do you really think a newly registered user would know how to do this? I, myself, do not know how to do it, and surely the administrators have better things to do than close user accounts!

Are, therefore, the statistics being interpreted correctly and do they truly mirror our community? Let every man decide for himself. For myself I don’t need hundreds of thousands of redundant users to admire the efforts of the OSM community. It is amazing what has been achieved in a few years and that is something worth promoting.

1 million is a big number

“We’re trying to promote OpenStreetMap. Nothing wrong with that, so please join in!”

I must be one of the oldest contributors to OSM and of course I will try and promote the concept but I refuse to brag using manipulated statistical data!

We just don’t have 1 million users/contributors and you all know that to be true. If we promote OSM using the 1 million statistic we leave ourselves open to ridicule and I see nothing to be gained from that!

I welcome the “Welcome Working Group” and just hope that they will go about their System Analysis in an applicable manner.

If they want to know why some sign on and do nothing then they must make the suggestion that the sign-out procedure be simplified. Something like this:

-sign-on

-don’t like it

-sign-off with a short multiple-choice questionnaire.

Nothing more is required.

PS As one of the oldest contributors I should sign-off days/months before I die, but you know, there is no simple way to do it, and I am, I think, an experienced contributor. That cannot be right can it?

Time to upgrade

I don’t know the Nüvi 1300 so what I am about to say may be not applicable. I have a Garmin 60CSx but I would expect that other Garmin products act in the same way.

“stick to the road” You can switch off this function: It is called “Lock On Road”. On the map page, select Menu; then select “Setup Map”. A number of icons appear at the top of the page: Select “General” if it is not already selected.

Move the curser to “Lock On Road” and press ENTR (enter) to off.

Having done so you trace not longer sticks to the road.

=========================================================

“more frequent nodes” I have set my 60CSx to create a node every second but only when I am moving. This may be possible on your 1300.

Select the “Track Log” page. Select “Setup” Set “Wrap when full” to On (there is more to this and you need to know it!) Set “Record Method” to Distance Set Interval 0.00km

I know that setting the Interval to 0km sounds daft but it works: The nodes are just 1 seconds apart.

You may not need a new piece of equipment. With a bit of luck another user will confirm the above!

Week of Dec 23-29, 2012

Just do it your way but do it. What is important is quality not quantity: You can always go back to the areas you didn’t complete!

JOSM

Once you have got the hang of JOSM, you’ll never go back to Potlach. Mastering the learning curve is well worth your time.

Is it funny or is it for real

@ alexz

I agree. The brewery could have a park within its boundary and there are definitely rows of cultured trees (fruit?) also within the boundary. Do you think I should guess it using Bing or leave it for someone with local knowledge?

Hausnummern

Good application. I’ll definitely use it. Well done!

BeWelcome switches to OpenStreetMap

I hope that BeWelcome will encourage their users/members to add to the OSM Databank.

Welcome Working Group

I welcome this initiative and I wish you success. See:

osm.org/user/jremillard/diary/18234

for a recent similar discussion on this topic.

The first issue that should be debated is what are the reason(s) for registering in the first place. As this is not the place to discuss anything I’ll leave it for the Welcome Working Group to do so!

1 Million Mappers Soon ... No, Not Really

@butrus_butrus and tmcw

I am not quite sure with whom you disagree. Just for clarity, I don’t want an automatic account closure concept.

What I would like to see is an easy opt-out for those who sign-in, don’t want it, and want to sign-out: THEY JUST CANNOT DO IT!

Their numbers are probably in the hundreds of thousands.

1 Million Mappers Soon ... No, Not Really

“Huh? So what happens to any data they’ve contributed?”

I purposely did not go into this issue as it seems to be obvious that those that have signed on have already agreed to the public domain concept. Signing off would not change this at all.

The only easy way for someone to cut-off themselves off from their OSM account is to eliminate their email address with which they have initially registered. They can also “falsely” modify their “My Settings” beforehand.

Unless it is for satisfying statistics I can see no reasons why an OSM account must be kept open when it fulfills not one single purpose.

Surely it is up to the user to decide if he/she wants to quit and the OSMF should make it easy for them to do so.

As one famous historical figure once said;

Don’t trust any statistic that you yourself have not manipulated.

1 Million Mappers Soon ... No, Not Really

When someone wants to leave the OSM community then it should be made easier for them to do so. The settings page should be made to cover this option. Signing out should be as easy as signing in!

Is it possible that the OSMF want to have all those redundant users (80%) just for propaganda purposes?

How many people sign on and want, for example, just routing? As they cannot see how to get it, they leave and don’t come back. This is because the OSM Homepage is unfortunately inadequate as it does not readily reflect the full capabilities available.

Also I think we should differentiate between users and contributors: Users use the data. This would include for example OsmAnd, openmtbmap etc. Contributors fill the database, do the backroom services, etc. Of course you can be both!

Will @MapBox allow imagery tracing for OSM?

@TomH

I think you may be a little confused. “Üser Diaries” is where random OSM contributors post useful information and comments (it can also be useless and sometimes it is spam i.e. rubbish).

maning is asking a legitimate question.

On https://help.openstreetmap.org/ the OSM Gurus such as Frederick Ramm and SomeoneElse give much needed advice and cannot be considered to be random users.

maning’s question may have been put already to this set of gurus and they may know the answer already.
