OpenStreetMap
Adding tags old_name with german names of villages and cities in Silesia area has no sense. Cause:
- a lot of them are old slavic names written with german translation (f.ex. Schweidnitz, Kroischwitz, Wilkau)
- nazis changed a lot of slavic names in 1934 to more german (Babitz -> Jungbirken, Kandrzin -> Heydebreck), action had been called: "Fort mit der polnischen fasade"
- there is no schema to tag historical names at all.
So if I find such names I will delete them without warning.

Hi, I don't see your problem: according to osm.wiki/Key:name the old_name tag should be used for names the tagged object was "Historically or previously known As". I use this tag e.g. for the old roman name of places and would be pretty pissed if someone deleted that simply because he doesn't like it. I would call such actions vandalism.

The real Problem here is not with old_name at all but with stuff like name:de because old_name is not rendered anywhere an mostly irrelevant. We already had this discussion on the german mailinglist about how and when name:de should be used.
Over here in the west somebody tagged Nancy with name:de=Nanzig which I think is just plain wrong because this name has been in use during the Nazi years only.
Unfortunately it is not that simple in many cases. Take Strasbourg for example which is still called Straßburg by most German people and which will qualify as name:de IMO. There are examples of polish towns as well. Szczecin would be an Example where I would also say Stettin will qualify as name:de. Lets face it I'm afraid there is no political correct solution to this problem, there will always be a gray area.

1. It makes sense to add historic/multilingual names, because we need them to find these towns/villages on the map with Nominatim. Currently, searching German place names in Silesia with OpenStreetMap works very well, but even Google Maps enables multilingual name search. Whereever multilingual names exist, they should be kept in the database. See osm.wiki/Multilingual_names
2. Historical tagging schemas for many purposes (e.g. abandoned railways) are currently discussed. Maybe they will come in 2010 or 2011 or 2012, depending on the development of a renderer who creates historical maps. However, preventing anyone from creating historical maps would be contrary to the aims of OSM.
3. Languages and nations themselves are neither good nor evil. We are treating EACH language with the same respect and we cannot make an exception just for one language and one region, as your title suggests.

Might be more useful to use something like old_name:de to specify what language the historic name is in.
